Default Buying advice for R170 230K please

Guys,

I'm considering an SLK 230K probably a facelift 2000 model as its the newer shape but without the possible road tax increase.

I'd really appreciate peoples' advice re problems to look for / buying advice.

I'm aware of roof problems due to microswitches and pumps, engine oil leaks causing engine ECU malfunctions and panel lights being labour intensive to change. ANything else I should look for?

Value wise in the UK high mileage (70-100k) exampls seem to be advertised for £7000ish and I'm guessing in the current climate are realistically worth £6000ish. Any thoughts?

Cheers Mark

Hi Mark

They're great cars definitely get one or two !

I think you can probably pay a little less than that. The £6,000-7,000 is what people are hoping for on Autotrader but a lot of them aren't getting that much. My experience is that the 2000-facelift model is nicer to drive compared to the original (even though I preferred the wing mirrors without the indicators).

Rain can cause a number of problems. I'd suggest you ask specifically whether a car you're looking at has had any problems with the heating/AC controls: leaves and water can block the drains and you get a corroded controller which can switch the heaters on full at random. And I'd check underneath for rust, and signs of water coming in at the roof joins.

Hope that's of some use.

Kind regards
Jonathan

I've driven my car the r170 2002 model with no problem what so ever.
I have own it for 6 months and mine is manual.
the only problem with my car is the transmission. I'm not sure whether it's my fault or the car itself.will get it check out on monday.

As far as I'm concern.first just check on log book.
second just try the car carefully is there any weird sound.
the only problem with slk in general is creaking sound from the interior on the uneven road or speedhump.

good luck in your hunting. R170 is really nice to drive.
oh btw my mechanic just told me to check on the bushes.

I paid £7,500 for my '99 230K. 55,000 miles...no sign of corrosion underneath or water ingress anywhere. It's the very common silver.

Mine has a few minor stone chips none of which show rust but I have had to attend to a couple of areas of surface corrosion on the inner curve of both front and rear l/h wheel arches. I think this is where road gravel gets thrown up by the wheels.

Hood operation works perfectly and no problem with any of the electrics (I'm touching wood as I type!).

No sign of any water, oil or other fluid leaks.

I can get up to 30 mpg if I drive carefully but have never had less than 25. Performance is good.

Good hunting.

John

Give it a good once over and take it for a long ride, look for leaks in head liner, trunk, engine bay, under the car. Make sure it shifts smooth and engine runs strong. Good luck

Europe vs US - 2000 is "facelift" for us, in the US it was sold as "2001 model year" in Nov 2000.
