Default New SLK230 Owner - First post

Early this month I purchased a '99 SLK230 w/ 38k miles as a weekend toy car.

Now I've owned a couple Corvette's, a Miata, and a few other non-inspiring convertibles, but it's amazing what I got for the money this time (I paid $13.5k, which was a little high but worth it). I also found a car my wife enjoys with me - she never was fond of the vette's or the Miata.

I have a couple of minor issues - I had to remove both door panels and re-glue everything. The middle leather arm rest section was a pain to get set (took me a couple times). I also have the standard paint chips on the console. I just got the console paint shipped to me so I know what I'll be doing this next weekend.

Now I have a couple of questions for the wiser-than-I who frequent this board:

a) Is the mods4cars remote system worth it? I like the idea of being able to being able to raise / lower the top remotely but would like to hear opinions.

b) I've noticed some shifting issues on a cold start when going from 1st to 2nd. The symptons are exactly what's covered under TSB NHTSA # 606293. I'm curious if if anyone has any insight on whether or not I should have any concerns. (Only happens when the car is first started - the rest of the time it's smooth)

Any other words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! Keith

Hello! I just joined as well! I have had my SLK fro almost 3 years, but just found this forum. I wish I had been able to get more time with the car since I got it, but have spent half that tim ein Iraq. :-(

Where did you get teh console paint? Mine has the same issue with some scratches revealing the base plastic beneath...

Thanks!

Regarding the console repaint - I did it over the Labor Day weekend. I got the paint on ebay. Example:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercedes-SLK-R-170-Interior-paint-anthacite-spraycan_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ50450QQihZ010Q QitemZ200252540455QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

You can see their company info & more videos at:

http://www.volico.de/shop/

For help in removing the console, there's a ton of info at (under disassembly):

http://www.buellwinkle.com/r170/

I bought the clear primer & top coat locally. Overall I'm happy with the results. In my case the console turned out just slightly darker than the rest of the interior but it's barely noticable - and it's much less noticable than all the paint chips that were there before.

Hi Grats on the new car

The shifting issues you speak of are not issues at all if its an auto, The car holds gears longer when cold to get up to temp sooner.

As for the roof I have never seen the one you speak of but I have the one of these (the full version), And its how the slk should have been.. http://www.simpleroof.de/en/?Projects:EasyRoof_SLK_R170 Dont know if you can still get them, He was going to start doing them again

I also am a new SLK owner. Just bought my 2002 SLK320 with 37k miles a month ago for 16k. I love this car. My last car was also a corvette which I gave to my son. Totally apples and oranges though so I wont make any 'vette vs SLK comparisons. The guys at the corvette forum I have belonged to for 6 years totally trashed me when I posted pics of the SLK. Not very tolerant it would seem. Oh, as for console paint Viponds in Oz has a perfect match for the console colors. I have emailed them and got an order form I will be sending back immediately. Enjoy your car! I surely am enjoying mine.
