noisey exhaust

hi newbe here loving my first slk apart from the noisey exhaust tone I bought the car thinking it needed a new back box as its very loud and raspy when you rev it also at tickover has that sound a holed exhaust has but up on the ramps its all good no blowing the noise is deffinatly coming from the tailpipe outlet so im assuming a baffle has collapsed or something inside . anyone any tips on exhaust makes to avoid as the fitter said a lot off cheap back boxes will either be just as bad or strangle the car would I be best scourcing a second hand oe unit .thanks

Agree with you had ours 18 months and at first I also thought it was blowing but checked and it was fine.

Still sounds the same (blowing) and I think you are correct that the baffles are worn, as ours 2002 is the original exhaust.

cheers chaps I took it to a good local exhaust place who pronounced the cats dead.a new frontpipe with cats was going to be £290 +vat+fitting or they could cut out the cats and weld a larger single cat in place for £150 all in .so its booked in for surgery this morning swill let you know the outcome getting it done at this place www.exhaustafix.co.uk. they have a good rep localy for building one off stainless systems

well a result, ish its loads quietter but still has that raspy sound when accelerating but about 50db less so im assuming that's how its supposed to sound tbh you can only hear it with the window open if you accelerate hard. it is very quiet cruising at 70 ish. oh and im treating it to a new shiny tailpipe finisher from mb as the old one was a bit crusty

well after a few more miles im still not happy. went to another exhaust place and had another secondhand rear silencer fitted and no change. the fitter there blamed the euro cat that the first place had fitted saying there next to no honeycomb in them and advised a second hand gen cat section. so I rang the breaker who I got the back box off and yippe he has the cat section .so another £100 poorer its going in this morning to have this fitted fingers crossed.good on exhaustafix tho who have said if I return the part they fitted the eurocat to they will refund me
