Question Im newbie

Hi, folks.

I saw a SLK 10 years ago, and then I decided that one day I would by one. Now I can almost say that I can afford one.

This is what I want:

-SLK from 1997 and up to 2003, i think.

-I am not interested in engine power, I do not want to use money on a big engine. The smaller engine the better.

-I do not want to use too much money, I do not know what is the best choice of SLK-models for me.

-I want an automatic gearbox

-Why should I buy a SLK? Tell me why, give reasons why!! I must convince myself why I should use my money on this car.

-Oh dear, what colour should I choose?

-Do you guys know of a good site with alot of pics? (of SLK`s...)

-Is this the place where I can get the best info on SLK? Any other links or usefull sites?

If there is some scandinavian guys here, I have a question for you:

-Should I import from Germany? Will I save money, and how much? I live in Norway.

I am currently trying to learn about this car, the different models and stuff, and reading about importing regulations. I want to buy the car in spring 2008.

Glad to see your enthusiasm. Most all your questions can be answered just reading thru the site.

If you want a basic SLK, look for an SLK230. 4 cylinder motor but enough power for most.

The R170 forum has pics of the SLK230 cars.

Many mods can be done and everyone here will help you with any questions.

There are quite a few colors to choose from, so get the color you like. I held out over a year for the color car and mileage I wanted. Don't be in a rush to buy.

Most people that buy an SLK are not going to be the kind of people that tear up a car. They generally are proud of them and take special care of them.

Best of luck on finding your car!

Hi Dandruff,

Welcome to the forum!! You will find yourself coming back to this forum because there's a lot of nice people and it is highly informative. The best part is, if the info you seek isn't already up there, it usually gets answered pretty quickly!! Although I was away for a little while, I usually have a pretty good time surfin' around and chattin' here.

As for the SLK you seek an R170 model. Manual transmissions didn't seem to come out until around 2001 or 2002 (someone will have to correct me on this as I am a little unsure).

If you don't require too much power and you just want it for the looks and ride, then an SLK 230 Kompressor will do for you.

It's a 2.3L 4-cylinder supercharged motor and outputs about 192hp and 190 lb-ft of torque (the numbers usually jumble a little bit up or a little bit down over the years but this is somewhat ballpark figures from memory).

The reason for an SLK is very simple. You want a very nice looking car that is fun, sporty, and has the practicality of a hard-top, all in one. I think the SLK is a very well-rounded car in terms of sport and luxury. For its time and class it had one of (if not THE) best looking interiors and was the only car (at the time) to come out as a hard-top convertible. To me anything over 180hp is enough and for a little car like that it is great.

Although its performance may not have been equivalent to the (at the time rival) Z3, I (imho) thought it looked much more attractive.

I am a lot like you in that I felt the exact same way when I saw an SLK 10 years ago too. I just fell in love with it and said I will do what I can to get one, one day!

I don't know about where you are, but over here in Canada, price is also very affordable for an R170 SLK (1997 - 2003).

As for colour selection, that's always up to you...but my favourites were either Blue, Red, or Black.

You can always find lots of nice pictures on forums like this. I also surf on MBFanatics.org (sorry admins/mods, I am not trying to promote or steer traffic away. So if you like I will remove the link) for pictures and info. 98% of the time, this site is sufficient enough!!

Good luck in your final decision!!

-Kelvin

The best colors come on the R170. The yellow (20% insurance discount, remember!) and the electric blue are my favorites. They make you feel happy and joyful no matter what the weather outside is.

Drive both the R170 and R171 and decide for yourself. The R171 has a little more room.

Whatever you do, make sure you can get some kind of extended warranty on it. These cars are not that reliable, and the top motors, SHEESH!

Hallo dandruff (flass?? )
En velkomsthilsen fra Sørlandet

I got a 96 230K http://tinyurl.com/38xvta

A 230K from 1997 with a mileage around 100K km costs around 100K NOK in Germany, give and take 20K.
Import tax for a 97 230K are aprox 100K NOK.
If you look on Finn.no you'll see there ain't too much to gain.
When it comes to power there's 3(4) engine types:
200 (1996 - 2000) 136PS That's not enough
230K (1996 - 2000) 193PS
200K (2000 - 2004) 163PS
230K (2000 - 2004) 197PS

I would go for a 230K. You don't pay that much extra for the extra power. The 200 without blower (kompressor) is to weak.

Regarding color: If you don't like too much cleaning, choose silver, if you love to polish, choose black

Here you'll find 3K + piturs of R170's http://tinyurl.com/2ofpwf

PM me if you want some info in Norsk

Why buy a SLK? Try one, and the grin on your face is reason enough.....

Wow, thanks for the help everyone

As for colour, I am surfing the net after pics and saving them on my pc. Im gonna look at those pics until I have decided what colour. I didnt find so many as I wanted, so thanks for the nice link with pics Gabus.

Hei Sørlandet!
I am from Tromsø, Northern region of Norway.

I have been to the Norwegian internetsite Finn.no, and I have checked som German sites aswell. I have also noticed that there is not much to gain in importing from Germany. I find this rather weird though, I thought it would be cheaper.

Im gonna buy the a SLK in spring next year, when the snow goes away.
That means that I have a decent time to look around and check out cars.

Oh, well the engines reability and stuff; My experience is that Mercedes Benz cars just don`t die. If they get some service and care, they go on forever.
My father has a 1985 MB190 with 350000km on it. It looks and feels just as new.

I cant write more now, I have this urge to just look at SLK-pics...

(dandruff = the nick chosen when all my friends names were stuff like "Overl0rd", "Mastakilla", "Blondbaby", etc. dandruff felt like the "right" nick for me.)

Welcome to the forum!

I have to say that this forum is an excellent place to learn and talk about the lovely SLK. If I were you I would go with the SLK230, not to much power but then again it isn't slow by any means. It has enough power and excitement to be recognizable as a sports car. Modifications are surprisingly easily attainable, not cheap - easily attainable - and they are relatively easy to install. If your looking for sports car attributes but at the same time good fuel mileage then go for the 230. The SLK320 is about the same power wise but is much more refined and smooth due to the V6. The 320 has a silky smooth V6 with a slightly opened up muffler(quiet when you want it to be, opens up when you want it to) to show everyone you have a sports car. When driven hard the 230 can feel a little weak and unresponsive, traits that you may or may not worry about. In terms of performance, the numbers are identical give or take a few tenths of a second. I have heard talk the the 230 has a more reliable engine but thats just talk. If your looking for the basic package -SLK230 - if your looking for more refinement but same performance -SLK320 and lastly for brute power and extreme performance the SLK32AMG.

Default Hello Dandruff (and everybody else)

Hello everybody, I'm new on this forum. Greetings from Trondheim!

Dandruff:
So, are you still checking out SLK? You said you wanted to buy a SLK in the spring, and now the spring is here

There are many reasons to buy an SLK. The main reason I bought one, is the fact that the SLK is by far the best looking two-seated roadster in it's price class. Another good reason for me; I just loved the automatic roof . If you read some reviews of the R170 SLK, you will find that they generally are very positive. Yes, it's a fairly expensive car here in Norway, but you get a lot for your money, and the price seems to stay at the current level.

I bought a silver '00 SLK 200 Kompressor with 163HP in August 2007, and I can strongly recommend the car. It runs well, the seats are very comfortable, the interior is beautiful, I have no rust on mine, and have not encountered any problems with it yet (besides from a dead battery I had to replace).

So I have only good things to say about the car, and I hope you're still considering an SLK. I'm sure you won't regret it
