Default Annoying Roof Rattle Found & Fixed

After encountering a substantial pothole, I had an annoying rattle and "popping" sound coming from behind the passenger seat which I initially feared was a serious problem such as a shock tower mount. But it only occurred with the top up.

Via some contortions while riding in the passenger seat and the roof up, I discovered that this was coming from movement between 2 pieces of the roof assembly as shown in the attached photo. I sprayed WD40 on the seam and the noise was gone. I tried to tighten the torx-head bolt, but did not have the correct size wrench.

You might try this if you have a similar noise.

Awsome, I think I have the same popping noise. I have lubed all my top seals with the golden bottle of MB stuff and that solved 99% of the noises but still have a plasticy pop/rattle.

Thank you slk55er. We at least know where to look when the roof rattles with the roof up.

Other places to look: http://www.slkworld.com/slk-r171-gen...hout-felt.html

The varioroof has many moving parts and seals that it is sometimes difficult to isolate where a rattle or sound is coming from.

Default Roof rattle behind passenger seat with top up.

If you operate the top to a half closed position, look from the inside of the car and locate a torx bolt near the top of the rear glass. The torx bolt secures a black adjuster for the top. Loosen the torx bolt, slide the adjuster down one tooth, tighten the torx bolt, and test drive the car. If that doesn't correct the problem, try repeating the steps. You may have to slide the adjuster in the other direction. My 06 SLK350 had a rattle behind the passenger seat and this corrected it. I own and operate an Auto Body Shop and have tried several things to correct this problem. This is what corrected my problem. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at zeigler@mchsi.com or dfz_1970@yahoo.com.
