Hello SLK People -- Just joined your site hope to get a little advice. Been tempting myself to get a lovely SLK and wanted some advice. I'm no racer (at all!) and just want a really lovely car. I've been browsing Autotrader's web site and wondered if you could give me some opinions on 1999 200K manual versus 230 tiptronic or indeed automatic. I've never driven a tiptronic -- hardly ever driven an automatic! -- and wonder what people say. Anything special about the 'facelift' model? I think the older mirrors looked much better! But much easier to get a manual in facelift model. And what does 'sports' mean? What's it got? Any advice? Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks, Jonathan.

Pre 2000 autos are normal autos, post have the tiptronic option. Both drive exactly the same if left in drive where 99% of people prob do. The auto will adapt to your driving style ie. hold gears longer, stay in gear on down hill runs if you are driving it hard. Manual option is a personal thing. Autos in these cannot be compared to older autos in most passenger cars. Bazzle

I had an SLK 320 with auto. I never used the tiptronic. Well, that is not quite true. I found it useful when doing mountain driving and using compression for braking going down hill and it was convenient to use the tiptronic constantly down and up shift. However, for normal driving, I found the shift delay from the time you press the shifter until the car actually shifted too long. I now have an SLK 350 and it is a totally different (and better) car. I may actually use the tiptronic in this car. It is much faster at shifting when in the S mode than the 320 was. If you can, I would definitely go for a SLK 350 rather than the 320. Don't get me wrong though. I think the 320 was a very, very good car and I was very happy with it. It is just that the 350 is a GREAT car.

| I enjoy the automatic though I use it in a very spirited manner. I down-shift coming to stops and run it out like a manual in accelerating. I also leave it in 3rd and 4th (3500-4000 rpm range) to wind through the back country roads around here. It's very fun!!

the best thing about the facelift is the fully colour coded bumpers etc. if it was me personally id go for the 230k auto simply because there are more around, and mercs r170 better suit autos. also u wont be wanting for power

Go with the 230K auto...you won't regret it! It's the best of both worlds, in the city (which is where I live) it's nice and relaxed, but head for the country or a windy road and the tiptronic is soooo much fun Jara.
