Intermittent BAS/ESP light

For about the last week that warning light has been coming on but unfortunately it's not every time the car is started. It seems to be about once every other day. When the light does come on it stays on until the car is turned off. The car seems to be normal other than the light being on. I know that such intermittent problems are the worst sort of things to solve so I'm hesitating taking it to the dealer as I would rather not have them fishing around--or is there some sort of error code that is stored when the light comes on so that if I took it to the dealer and at that time the light was not acting up they could still tell what was malfunctioning?
Many thanks for any advice.

When the BAS/ESP light comes on, does turning the steering wheel completely left and then completely right turn it off and get it to stay off?

Also, the BAS/ESP warning is comes on if your system voltage is too low (10 volts or lower). Are your battery and alternator functioning well?

Have you had your car read for any fault codes?

Also there are some sensors that might be going bad:
Yaw Sensor, Steering angle sensor, lateral (acceleration) sensor. You can search the forum for more details on sensor problems leading to BAS ESP light coming on.

Since I read about the possible lock to lock trick the warning light has not come on so have not had a chance to put that to the test--but from reading the owners manual that this should only help if the battery has been disconnected--which is not the case. As for the battery/alternator--no idea about that. The battery is less than a year old but no idea how the alternator is working other than the fact that the charging light has never come on. Can understand the warning light coming on if the voltage drops below 10 but the light stays on while the car is being driven up until I turn it off. The next time I crank it up the light will be off--so it's one of these aggravating intermittent type problems. If that BAS/ESP light would just come on and stay on I'll take it to the dealer. Would rather them have something concrete to work with.

I think brake light switch faults also create the same warning?

Hey Bob!

I'm from Hickory. We should have a meetup.

I'm having an odd BAS intermittent sputter as well.

More detail....
My car randomly loses power after I turn it off. So many times that I memorized the code to unlock the radio. It seems like a short or ground. I've checked everywhere I know to look. From what I can tell, it's totally random. Temporary fix - which always seems to work - is to take the key out, wait a second, and put it back in.

I know when it's going to do it at night because all my lights go dim when I press the brakes or roll down a window. I can almost kill the engine if I try to take the top down. But if I just restart the car, the power is usually fine. I've had the alternator and battery tested multiple times, always good.

The BAS/ESP?(I know BAS for sure but it's the one under it) blinks if I drain too much power. For example, attempting to take down the top. Otherwise these lights never go off.

So the car seems fine. The latest thing I had done was new rear brakes and rotors (MB parts). They still occasionally squeak. There's also a fine clicking noise from them that concerns me because I never noticed it before.

I'll attempt playing with my trunk tomorrow night to see if I can get a steady result from it.

(Random, my mom has a white SLK 230. If we ever need a compare/contrast we should be set.)

You might want to check the ground on the module. This will also create this fault - similar to unhooking the battery.

I'm curious. Does the "!" lamp flash?

Can you specify which module? Where should I be looking?

The big yellow triangle? Yes. But I don't get any error codes to look up.

Also, when I say flash, it does it for a split second when the voltage is low. (like when I act like I'm going to take the top down).

I might take a video this weekend of it so you guys can get a better idea. This thing is puzzling me.

I'd start by cleaning the battery posts/clamps.

I believe it is incorporated into the ABS pump in the left front of engine compartment.

I'll look this afternoon...

ETA: I don't know if the 320 is similar to the 230. Maybe some 230 owners will chime in?

No problems

Here again to report no issues in over a week. Kind of strange. Not sure what I did to fix it. I didn't check the BAS yet - I will this weekend.

The last thing I know I did was the "trunk reset" I read about somewhere on some forum (not even sure if it was this one). I don't even remember the logic behind it. Who knows if it's fixed.

Trunk reset - just put the key in the trunk and turn it a couple times lock/unlock.

I seriously doubt that was it. But I have no other alternative explanations at the moment.

BAS prob-the speed sensors on each hub are another common culprit.
died prob- you are not making good battery connection somewhere. follow all the power AND ground lines starting at the battery, also check grounds, there's pics of them on one of the threads somewhere...

This same problem happened to me 5 years ago...intermittent BAS/ESP lights coming on but no other symptoms to go along with it. I took my 320 to the Stealership and one of the technicians told me that when this happens, it usually means that the alternator is starting to go bad. I really didn't believe the guy, but 2 months later, my wife and I were driving up a bridge and the car suddenly just lost all electrical power! I mean everything, just shut off. I ended up getting the car towed to a different MB dealership and sure enough, they told me the alternator wasn't consistently charging, then it stopped charging all together...I was literally running on battery power for maybe the last few minutes before it died. Fortunately they installed an new alternator and gave me a new battery under warranty. I haven't had that same problem ever since. If you begin to feel that the car is a little lethargic especially when you're accelerating, its probably because the alternator is no longer functioning as it should. Sometimes just checking for voltage doesn't tell you the whole story since its so intermittent. Anyway, just letting you know my own experience. Of course, the cause of your issue could be completely different than mine.......Good luck! Hope you resolve this problem ASAP.

Or it could be the battery cutout relay. Relay = $50 alternator = $400.

Check to see if your alternator is putting-out more than 14.5 volts. If it's closer to 18-19 volts (no load) the relay is probably bad.
