Default Wiper water leak?

Hey everyone,

My fiance has 1998 SLK-230 that appears to have two possibly related issues. The first is when you fill the washer fluid, it starts coming out from just behind the passenger side wheel well. The tank seems to be located somewhere inside the body of the car. Is this just an overflow or is the bottle cracked.

The second issue is that the inside windshield seems to fog up unusually fast for some reason. I made sure that the compressor was on and that the vents were open, but after the engine gets warm, it begins to fog.

Is it possible the wiper fluid is dripping into where the heater core is and steaming up?

I don't have a shop manual so I don't know where stuff is yet on this car, but any thoughts would be helpful.

Ed

Info filled out, donation made...

The manual doesn't go into any detail about whether or not there is an overflow or how to get access to the tank itself, but I do appreciate the link...

Thanks,
Ed

Not sure where the leak could be but here's a PL breakout for the wiper/washer system which includes the headlight nozzles. It may help you track it down. By the way, your chassis is a 170.447.

The steam is probably it...steam. That can only come from one place and that's your coolant. It is more likely coming from the heater, specifically the heater core, something corroded or broke, it will be a b@$* to get into and replace. I had that happen to one of my "american" made cars but not on the MB or BMW. Do you know if you are using Mercedes coolant or is it the regular "Preston" that someone replaced it with?

if the matrix is leaking in the dash can you smell antifreeze when you get in.?
If yea as a short term fix you could disconect the water pipes going to the matrix in the engine bay. Then join them together with a pipe conector and clips.top up water and run to temp and check for leaks.
You will have no heating but it will stop water getting into the car untill you get the matrix replaced.
No idea what a matrix is like to do on a slk but most i have done are big jobs

Anyone else know?.

p.s how cold is it at the mo the washer bottle could of froze at the bottom and the expandig ice may of broken the seal around the pump.
when it thaws it may fix its self

cheers pete

I don't smell any antifreeze with or without the steam. The steam does occur after the engine is warmed up, which is why I thought it might relate to water or something getting into the vent.

The car has always been garage kept, so the drain hoses look really clean. I am going to blow some compressed air through them, but I don't think that is the issue.

She has always had dealers fill everything, so the coolant and wiper fluid is from the dealer. I don't trust the one dealer she has been taking the car to, which is why I decided to do a once over myself.

Thanks for the diagram of the wiper fluid piece, now I know what part to order.

before you order the part try this. use the fluid. the top of the container is designed to have a gap so that under expansion the fluid will come out the top and not crack the bottle. most likely the dealer overfilled it

This is my first posts at this site. I've been a W140 owner for 7 years and my wife has had an SLK 230 for about 4 years now.
Anyway, your leaking problem is exactly what I had last month. I took the right front wheel off, and opened up the panel in the wheel well and noticed on the washer fluid tank that there is a plug in the middle (half way up). This plug appears to be for some other feature not used on this car. I guess it develops a leak on occasion. I temporairly stopped the leak by wrapping the rubber stopper with plastic kitchen wrap. It seemed to have worked and now I'm looking for a replacement.

Just replaced a washer bottle on a 2000 320. The plastic had become brittle and was cracking resulting in leaks through the walls of the bottle. In Australia so not cracked from freezing. About $100 US for a new bottle over here.

Just replaced mine at an independent shop. As I was having a major service done, the owner did not charge me labor, but the washer container was less than $90.00. He had to remove the right front wheel and go through the fender well.
