Air Conditioning
Hi everyone, just joined the forum having just bought my first SLK a 99 230k. Only had the car a week and love it, a really enjoyable ride, we just need the weather now in the UK... Question please, Ive read the owners manual and it seems pretty straight forward to set the air con, just set the temps to cold and switch on the settings to 1,2,3 etc with the air directed at you, but it blows cool air, not cold enough that I would say ahhh air con. Plus if you adjust them slightly, you hear a gurgling noise then it blows hot air. Any ideas ? Under the bonnet there is an air con unit so the car has it. Should it be blowing really cold air or is that normal ? Is this a common fault ? Am I doing something wrong? Apart from that, she's done 87k and drives real nice. The odd bit of paint rubbing on the red interior (sorting that with a paint pen from Volico Germany). Really glad I found this forum been an interesting read. Thanks.....
welcome to the forum. this may sound silly, but is your aircon on button pressed? or depressed depending on your version of the temp control. but other than that, it does take a sec for the cold air to kick in. Dont know why, it works much faster on my E. hope that helps but i'm sure some more mechanically members will chime in soon.

Thanks guy's think I'm in agreement. There is no switch to switch on for air con, but there is a unit under the bonnet, so it has aircon. Will get the dealer to look at it while its still under warranty......

Hello, just looked in the Manual for my 2001 SLK. It shows 2 buttons for the non aircon version, and 3 buttons for the aircon version. It says that if the`EC` button is lit up in red that it is in `EC` mode, NO aircon, when the light is off, aircon is on. Hope this helps, regards Damian.

I just want to confirm that DJC013 is totally correct.
To have A/C you must have the 3 button switches situated between the heater dials, like this....

Thanks everyone. The setting you show is exactly what I was doing and it was just 'cool' air. The car went in yesterday and appears to be blowing 'cold' air now, so it seems to be sorted. I'm just waiting to speak with the garage today to see what the issue was as the car was picked up and delivered back and no note left.
As an aside, earlier in the summer (if anyone in the UK can remember that), well may, I was in a local branch of Kwik Fit where they were telling me that the previous day they'd had a number of cars in for aircon re-gassing.
See,ms that they re-gas the system then leave the car running with the aircon switched right down. They told me one car went down to -7 Centigrade and had frost on the inside of the windscreen!

Hi, did you ever find out what your issue was with your aircon? I am desparately trying to find info that may help me find my problem which sounds similar to yours but with a screeching (fan belt slipping type noise) behind the glovebox.
