Default Top Operation

Hello all, I just joined this site from benzworld. Hope to learn a lot here. I have a 99 slk 239K and a 01 E430. My question is . everytime I lower the top the rear shelf raises up to allow the top to enter the trunk and as that happens the rear shelf falls onto the top slamming into it very hard. I dont think mercedes meant that to happen. It hits so hard that paint is coming off the top on both sides. Is there a bumper pad that is supposed to be on the mount or is there a cable that lets this thing lower with some degree of sanity . Or is it a benz goof and you guys have a fix for it? Took car to dealer to inquire about it and service dept is programmed to sa bring it in and we can look at it. Which ain't hapening. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

The shelf behind the roll bars should not come close to the roof as it retracts into the trunk. There should be a inch or more clearance. The shelf rotates quickly into the closed position, but as the roof is seating into the trunk.

Are you saying you have a timing issue with the shelf that closes prior to the roof seating into the trunk.

The shelf slams onto the roof . Is there some kind of adjustment to make ? Any instructions available? The shelf falls as if it has been dropped onto the top. It opens and closes ok when top goes up . Down is the hiccup. The roof is in place ok and then the shelf slams down.

Is the shelf flat?

When you open the trunk from the back with the top down, do you see the shelf hitting the top of the roof?

The roof catches levers to flip the shelf to the closed position. If someone tried to lif the shelf by hand may have damaged the levers.
This video shows the roof catching the levers as the roof seats into the trunk.

It appears as the shelf slams down on the car as well in the video. Is there some kind of adjustment to make on the shelf? It closes as it should just when the top goes down it slams.

on the shelf mechanics there are 2 bolts one on each side that appear to be adjustable. would it be probable that they adjust the distance of the shelf ? I have looked at it and it does appear to be for the shelf but I can see no contact point on the shelf. I am going to adjust the bolts and see what happens. wish me luck! thanks for video and your assistance.

Sounds like a good plan. Let us know how it went.
