2001 SLK 320 suddenly brakes and BAS/ESP light comes on

I bought my wife a 2001 SLK 320 and recently while she is driving it, the car will act like she slammed on the brakes and the BAS/ESP light will come on. She isn't hitting the brakes when this happens, she is just driving along. Can anyone tell me what might be the cause of this?

This happened to me. Is it a defect?

This was the scariest thing that happened to me while I was driving. I was just driving around a slow turn and the right front wheel (of my 2001 SLK 230) just braked itself hard enough to squeal, and then the BAS/ESP light came on. It's done this twice so far. Any ideas why? Should I just go to the dealer?

I will be going to the dealer tomorrow! i've never heard of a car engaging the brakes on it's own and that is not something to take lightly, but I am curious to know if this is a prevalent issue with this model/year or any BAS/ESP system.

It may be something as simple as your tire size/tire wear
are all of your tires wearing evenly & or matched sizes?

It sounds like an electronic stability control (ESP) malfunction. Theoretically, it applies a wheel break(s) during evasive maneuvers (high G forces).

I'd have it checked out as soon as possible.

All of the tires are up to par. I had a friend who is a mercedes mechanic at the dealership come look at it and just as you said, he suggested I bring it in for the computer diagnostic as well since he saw nothing particular in a visual scan of the brakes/ tires etc. I'll post the outcome as it develops! Thanks for everyone's help!

good chance that it is just a wheel speed sensor gone bad but something like that is worth haveing checked out.

Check tire sizes first as was suggested above. Was anything recently done to the tires, i.e. replaced a tire or tires, etc.?

The brake switch was replaced in May so I think this must be related. The tires were inspected (not rotated though) but I did put air in the tires last week. I have an appointment at the dealer on Monday so I'm hoping for the best. Im trying not to drive it until then

I've had this light on too!
It was tracked back to a sensor at the handbrake. 'The lateral movement sensor'
I would like to bet this is the root cause.
Putting it on a diagnostic should find it.
Pounds to replace - not a very expensive job if I'm right.

Wow, I just want to say how helpful everyone has been. I've mentioned all of your ideas to my mechanic. My poor car is driving terrible now but I drove it to the dealer anyway. Apparently the problem appears to stem from the brake switch that was replaced, but he'll have to take out the middle console to see what it is exactly. I'm kinda bummed that I may not make it to the Vegas SLK meet! But I've still got hope- my mechanic is pretty good and he says he can figure it out in couple of days...

I'll keep posting the developments

you need to check the yaw and roll sensors. this will cause the bas esp to think the car is in a dangerous turn or lean and cause it to apply brakes and decelerate the engine

Appointment tomorrow...

Just wanted to let everyone know that I had a busy busy week and wasn't able to take the car back yet. But it's going in the shop tomorrow morning. I will let you all know how it goes... I haven't driven it since, but on the good side, my friend let me drive her e350 most of the week and it drives like a heavy cloud in comparison to my little slk.

I've printed all of your suggestions and will have it in hand in the morning. Thanks!

The Diagnosis:

Well the problem is the Yaw sensor. Apparently it thinks my car is rolling over every time I make a turn. So this will need to be replaced. Also the Check Engine light is unrelated. An oxygen sensor has gone bad so that was just a coincidence that they happened at the same time.

This is apparently a rare malfunction but certainly a very dangerous one, so instead of having it replaced I'm asking if it can be disabled or removed. I'd rather take my chances with the manual brakes than with an electronic device that could throw me into a wall to be honest. It's like having HAL for a copilot.

The yaw sensor is possibly used for other things as well, and not getting a signal might be an issue. Make sure you research it throughougly before you disable it or it may result in other performance problems.

Update... (sort of) I'm still waiting to get information about disabling the yaw sensor. I'm waiting to discuss it with the service manager who's out of town for one more week.

Most likely I'll be replacing it, but I'd feel safer without it (HAL!).
