Default Magnaflow X-Pipe Installed

After sitting in the garage for a couple months (procrastination is a right! ) I finally got around to getting it installed today. Brought it to a specialty hot rod shop (who do excellent one off full custom exhaust work for everything from stock resto projects to full on rail drag cars) for install, and about an hour later I was on my way. Part #10791 is not completely plug and play, they had to do a little bit of fab work to make it fit, but in the end it came out looking factory stock and I'm more than happy with the result there. Along with the new exhaust note! At idle or part throttle it really is hard to notice, but at WOT there is certainly a deeper, harder edged V8 bellow now than before. But again, nothing objectionable at all IMO - no raspiness, just the sound of a healthy V8 engine working hard.

So if you're wondering about doing this mod, and may be worrying about the new sound level being a bit objectionable - don't. 90% of the time you probably won't even notice it, and the other 10% you'll just be smiling a new ear to ear grin!

Any picks of the installed unit? I'm looking to do the exact same thing. I'm glad to see the part# as well in the post to confirm what I need.

Thanks tons!

Alroumi, you have Supersprint though right; which was designed for the SLK at a much higher $$$. The Magnaflow is a universal piece most often used in Mustangs.
Ultimately I'd love to have an Xpipe cat back system that bolts ups rather then cutting out just the resonator. I would want to be able to put things back to OEM but not for the extra $$ that Supersprint or other charge.

Forgot to take the damn camera, so no installing/installed pics nmslk, sorry. To sum up, the Magnaflow piece is just a touch short overall to fit precisely the gap left by removing the resonator, so the guy welded on a couple small sections of stainless pipe to one end to close the gap. He also used a pipe stretcher to massage the stock pipe ends to snug them up to the Magnaflow piece. Then welded the whole shebang together - nice and tidy with no leaks and factory appearance.

Yup, any weight savings is a good thing! Like nmslk explained, the SS item is specifically designed for the SLK55, while the Magnaflow is a parts bin item for anyone fabbing up an exhaust - luckily, with some very minor modifications, it fits our cars too. And weighs a mere 2 lbs!

Good luck Bill, glad you found and installed the X pipe. You were quiet reluctant at first when you got to listen to mine, Dsb's, Lizard and Cj's.

I really don't think some of the x-pipe only recordings do the change justice Mohammed, so I was a bit wary. But since I already had the dang thing and I was tired of tripping over it... and it was a slow day...*L*

Glad I did, it sounds MUCH better in reality! It really isn't loud at all, just sounds "healthier" if that makes sense *L*.

Keep the car in m-mode and whilst in third gear just loosen up the taps and let it hit around 6,000 rpm then let go. You might here a very nice burble or sort of back fire which just makes my day even better, especially with the topdown.

Can you take some pics of it now that it is installed for me?
So knowing that the stock pipes had to get stretched to fit the 2.5" Xpipe would the 2.25" xpipe be a better choice? I guess that's why I'd like to see pics to see the sizing.

Thanks,
nmslk

Heading out for the evening now, but tomorrow I'll see if I can crawl under there far enough to snap a pic!

P.S. re the 2.25 vs 2.5 piping - I'm not sure if it was actually that big a difference stock vs the Magnaflow 10791 unit. There was really very little massaging to get it all to mate up so it's better to have the 2.5" size rather than risk the possible restriction the smaller 2.25" version "may" introduce?

Questions if anyone is OK with answering:

What is the cost of the Magnaflow?

What is the cost of the Supersprint?

What was your install cost Bill?

Would this work (including removal of the resonator) void the manu warranty on a 07 dealer purchased car?

Thanks!

Cold shot the Supersprint costs around 900-1,000 dollars if memory serves me right.

Glad to hear another member enjoying the X-pipe mod. It's especially pleasing knowing it's a fairly inexpensive mod. I like the way you describe it. By no means is it offensive. It is simply better sounding.

I will say this however... during cold startups the car is noticably louder and more aggressive. My neighbor across the street said he used to wake up to his alarm clock in the morning. Now, my car is his alarm clock. Lol. Glad I could be of service.

PS. Magnaflow Xpipe cost around $80. Install charge maybe another $80-100.

Here's a pic...rained last night so it's dirty under there *L*. The car is pretty low, so it's hard to get a good angle for a shot, but you can see the x-pipe just left of center here with the stock piping after the welds on the right.

Pipe and install altogether is right around 200 bucks (80 for the install). I had to get the pipe shipped in so it cost me a little more than what you can probably find it for if someone local to you already has it in stock.

Shouldn't affect your warranty, it's just a piece of exhaust pipe astern of the cats - doesn't affect those or anything else in any way. Other than sound .

A short vid from this morning after taking the pic above...sound record quality really doesn't do it justice, but here it is anyway.

Yes it's dirty too *L*...
