Default Sports air box

Hi
any one install the MB sports air filter box on an SLK 350 (2006 model)
What is it like and how much each in australia?

Was going to fit K&N or Green Filters but may stop with original but go with sport box.

You can fit the sports airbox with the green filters, its not a problem at all. I hope Bernd js chimes in as I think he has this airbox on his SLK350, if not PM him for any questions.

Good luck.

Unhappy Sports filter box

I have just recieved my new sports filter box - I have not installed it yet because I am waiting for the Green filters from SLKworld to turn up.
The new box would appear to be identical to the original - except it has an additional opening on each side. This is about a 1" round hole on the curved end of the round section immediately adjacent the filters - you will see the area if you look on the back quarters of the cover.
This hole has a very fine filter cloth covering it.
There is also a small rubber diaphram on the bottom under the filters - I am not sure what that does .
Bearing in mind the new box is pretty expensive- and the grey panel on the top does not match the silver bit on the other half - which means a small but complicated paint job - I would have to say that if I had known what little difference there was I would have modified my existing one which would be a really simple job.
It also comes with new filters - which are also superfluous.

Rick - I like the way you think. Would you mind posting some detailed pictures of your new airbox before you install it?

Will do.
I am looking for the engine note change at about 3500rpm which some members have suggested happens with the sports box & Green filters.
Hopefully the investment made will mean that I do not have to change the exhaust - I will let you know.

Bill - Filters arrived safe and sound. But when you look at the size of the package I question the value of $US165 in shipping costs. I regularly get stuff ex States and this is VERY expensive for size & weight of package.

Cheers

Here is the exact charge from FedEx. Its not me maybe a crazy Fuel Surcharge or something. seems crazy for a 4Lb package

Discounted net charge: $158.99 Dimensional weight: 7.8 is what real time shipping was supposed to charge acording to there real time rates this is what thay charged $186.49

It cost us money to sell you the filters

Hey Bill, I am sure it wasn't going to you! I got some stuff off Piecha the other day out of Germany- 4 times the size and three times the weight - Euro37.00. Arrived in same sort of time.
That went on DHL. May pay to look at either alternative shipper or alternative "level of service".

I really enjoy the site and have learnt a lot. Many thanks.

We were shipping DHL, was running into alot of issues with no service to locations, have phone meeting with our FedEx rep on monday, seems to be an issue on international shipments to AU and NZ after looking at shipments over the last 6 mo.

As it is there is not enough markup on shipping to cover paypal/credit card fees on shipping when fedex is charging this excess

here is the break down

Transportation Charge $126.71
Extended Delivery Area $22.00
Declared Value Charge $0.60
Fuel Surcharge $37.18 (25%)
Total Charges USD $186.49

Filters sold at $130 ($17 profit)

subtract $14.22 in credit card fees leaving $2.78 in profit
subtract $165 (amount paid for shipping) from the actual cost of $186.49 costing us and adional $21.49

Leaving the site $18.71 in losses to sell 2 filters, Not counting the time it takes to to process the order and customs forms and get it to fedex

I may just stop shipping international, every one is upset by the fees and always seems to cost us $$ to sell internaional due to shipping fees and surcharges. Credit card and paypal fees increase on international transactions also. I will not mention any names here but when you do not pay your import/duty taxes we are forced to pay them. That has happened many times already to the tune of $40+ each time more losses for the site.

The site can not afford these losses

Rick - awesome, and thanks - one more favor, can you do a couple of shots with a ruler? I'm interested in the inside, outside, and "depth" of the new "hole". Also, is the diaphragm sealed or is it "movable"?

Default sports air filter box

I have fitted box - but hole dimension - on outside is 40mm high and 55mm long - elliptical because on the curve. Inside the "tube" is tapered so only about 28mm at the end.
Length on the longest point about 85mm (at a guess)

The diaphram is sealed.

I am going to take for a drive later - for the first time so I will tell you if the changes have made any noticeable difference

Default sports air filter box

Hey UK-C200 that other toy of your looks a bit of fun! Is that an ex trainer?
I took the car for a test run - yes it has bit more tone at 3500rpm+. Really can't tell if there is any performance improvement.
I have to say if I was to do it again I would do the extra hole in the existing box myself and do the Green filters.
On a couple of Porsches I have had when you buy a Sports air box from say some one like Fabspeed - they take the whole side off! The 964 I had a few years ago had the most stunning sound.

Anyway UK-C200 - you have a good time up in the air mate.
Cheers Rick
