Default Coilovers on SLK55?

I really want to install coilovers and 19" wheels on my SLK55. I want something like KW V3's and DCR wheels similar to YNOT's (awesome wheels YNOT) but with 5 spokes. I have two concerns:

Concern 1: KWSuspension only lists KW V3’s for the SLK350 not the 55. I would think that the 55 would require a stronger spring due to the extra weight of the V8? Anybody know the spring rate for the 350 and the 55?

Concern 2: Will the 19" wheels rub the spring cup/adjuster nut?

Anyone have coilovers on an SLK55? With 18" stock wheels or 19" after market wheels?

Regards, Ed

Those are some great questions. I'm interested in hearing a response. However, I can't remember if anyone here has coilovers.

Thanks for the compliment, I think DCR's looks great, do it.

I don't recall anyone with coilover's on the 55 but a couple of members here hav e it on their 350's. Good luck in your research, hopefully someone will chime in.

Ed, you get a special version of Bilstein coilovers (B16 PSS9) from Carlsson and Vaeth for your 55. It´s about 2.000,00 Euro.

Ed, Hey its good to see you on the forums lately. Its been a long time since Ive seen your posts, I remember you from late 05 when I ordered my SLK55 and what a small world it is to see you on SLKWorld.

Welcome to the Forum! and enjoy the stay,Regarding coilovers there are two choices to go for either H&R, Carlsson or Vaeth.

I would go for H&R because they manufacture many springs and suspension components to German Tuners like Carlsson but they differ stlightly maybe interms of settings. No and it wont rub, because with coil overs the system is fuly adjustable when you install it as you can tell the installer how low you want to go rather than having it dropped and causing the wheels to drop.

If you need the part number for the H&R Coilover's dont hesitate to contact me.

alroumi, what's the latest pricing on the H&R's? I'm very interested. I'm riding on the SLK55 suspension now, and while it's a lot better than the SLK350 standard's, I wish there was more of a drop.

You are Gero:biglaugh, checkout GMP PERFORMANCE and I will try to find other vendors who carry H&R as I forgot this was a couple of months back.

Alroumi: Thanks I've been real busy, so not much MB forum time. I picked up another Corvette (1972, vert, full frame off restoration, pics below) so I've been spending time on the vette forums. I didn't know H&R made a coilover system for the 55. I'll send you a pm.

Thanks, Ed

I have the KW coil overs V3 on my 200. The springs are much harder than standard. I don't know how about using them on a 55. When asking KW about spring rate, standard SLK versus KW they gave me an answer I didn't understand. How is spring rate expressed and what could be right value for standard / sport / racing?

KW is giving you too much possibilities for the setup. You need more time to match the right than you´re driving the car if you´re not Michael Schumacher. In our Club one member is driving KW, some others Bilstein. The Bilstein is great.

I don´t know the best setup for the KW too...

I just visited the AMG factory in Affalterbach. While in the custom shop I saw the coilover's for the SLK55 AMG Black Edition. The had adjustable ride height and adjustable compression and rebound settings. I going to see if this can be ordered through the dealer.

I got to meet and talk with the technician (Mike Thomas) that built my engine. He has been building engines for AMG for 7 years. He is now building the 63 engines. I also got to see them build the SLR engine.

They had a CLK AMG55 DTM convertible on the showroom floor. What a beautiful car. See this link for a picture. I love the wheels, they were 19" on the front and 20" on the rear.

I just saw that thread. His wheels look great. I saw several cars running the Nurburgring with OZ racing wheels. They are supposed to be light and strong.

I wonder what 18's on the front with 19's on the rear would look like? I saw a few SLK's in Germany that looked like they had staggered wheel sizes and they looked good. I'm going to check into the OZ wheels.

While i have never worked on an MB with staggered sizes so i can't say for sure but if the alloys where at different sizes i would expect ESP to malfunction.

It will be a no-go on the Black Series parts sorry mate.

With 225/40 18 and 255/30 19 ESP shouldn't notice anything.....
It's just the rims that have different size, not the rubber.......
