I love how it sounds, Ive been driving it with the top down since the installation of the exhaust, many say it sounds very mean and aggressive after the xpipe and cats.

The car sounds amazing!

Congrats, and enjoy...

I would love to see dyno results, and perhaps if you can get a hold of a db sound meter to measure the sound volume.

Ok, this may seem a bit of a dumb question, but Why do we need an X pipe in the first place? Why not just have 2 pipes go straight from Cats to Backbox?

xpipes are intended to improve scavenging, and balance the left and right exhaust to decrease the rumbling. to use the scavenging effect requires compatible headers though...and in the US we actually like the rumbling.

So in reality, if one was to remove the X-pipe entirely... would this affect the performance of the exhaust or would it just make it rumble more? backpressure?

My understanding was the x-pipe flows better then the traditional h-pipe design so given you less backpressure and more horses, also quieter b/c of the design. you'll have to replace the x-pipe with h-pipe, I'm not sure how a straight pipe would work.

Here's a quote I got from this site, "X-pipes are used in dual systems to increase the velocity of the gas flow to encourage scavenging of the exhaust gases. The actual crossing and merging of the gas flow also increases torque across the rev range. This type of system was pioneered for use in race cars. It is now becoming popular in modern muscle cars, especially those with I.R.S. as the tailshaft does not move up and down with the movement of the car."

Running straight pipes on a 55........ because i wanted to know what it was like , and could always move to an x pipe if need be. The resonator removal for the mechanic was easy, and so was the rewelding of straight pipes.

Some other info:
- Sound is deeper and rumbles, but no resonance in the cabin like i had with other cars e.g Subaru decatted. It is only slight louder upto 2k rpm, but then does go much louder upto 5k rpm. Above this its sounds awesome like a diving plane crossed with a US muscle car .... To me it is loud but acceptable, as you can at times drive in a way to aviod attention if needed.

- It does burble, fart and pop... but of course no flames as the cats are still in. I can only describe this as similar to my old TVR Griff V8 and brings back memories. The loudness of all this character is not as much as the TVR though.

- At tickover it is not louder in my opinion, but does have a slighty strange whispy / airy noise, will less rumble. It is not leaking as ive checked it.

- The car has now done 4K miles like this and returns more mpg. Feels like it pulls harder from 4krpm.

- Mercedes dealer loved it and couldnt see any issue with this mod in his opinion.

- The backboxes on the 55 look like they are not actually doing a lot noise wise, as there is no silencing. They are actually look as though they are a straight one pipe design with a twin outlet
