Default What are your next performance modifications ?

The topic is simple, State your next performance modifications?

I aiming for the Kleemann Headers as a birthday gift or earlier, Currently I am 1,000 bucks short of the headers and If possible the supersprint X pipe at the same time and for now these modifications are great combined with the Ecu upgrade and the drop in airfilters, I already have.

With these mods I am estimating to reach 388hp-393hp depending if the SLK55 is 355hp or 360hp in stock form; I am not sure.

Lets say
10hp from the ecu
3hp from the airfilters- euroteckmotorsports dyno sheet of a c55
20hp from Headers , so thats 33hp+355hp on the stock 5.5V8 = 388hp

You'll have to talk at the wheel mate. How will you know the gains if it's all estimated and sales talk. My car was 317tq and 299hp at the wheel. there was also another slk55 at the same dyno stock that got 303hp and 305TQ, so I was quite happy. Have you dyno'd you car yet. I'd do it prior to any mods. but if they vary that much in Tq i'd want to see before and after numbers to be happy with spending that much cash.

Is it really possible to gain as much as 20hp when replacing headers? Has Mercedes done a poor job designing the original one?

It's not a 'poor' design, it is a design that is the cheapest to manufacture and most adaptable for emissions controls.

Like cyberdrakon says mate its not so much poor design as the stupid emissions rules that mean there have to be compromises across the board.

Ideally your header would just be a massive tube going in a perfectly straight line from each cylinder to the outside of the car via the shortest possible route so like out the side or something.

I'm with easty on this one, it's not really worth modding a normal aspirated engine, there isn't a whole lot to gain for the money. It's all estimates, I guess it's the thought that counts for performance mods for the SLK. The gain isn't much. I saw the dyno charts for a full exhaust (eisenhaus or supersprint) and no gain in either torque or hp for the SLK350, just sounds better. I can get a cheap $200 muffler to sound mean and aggressive, much better then spending over $2K.

Airfilter doesn't do much, there's stories that the filters will let in alot of dirt and will ruin your engine in the long run, it's a cheap mod, but I'm still hestitant and have not purchased one yet.

Headers are expensive too and there has not been any dyno results that I've seen, all estimates, so it can be no gain up to 40hp? Who knows, it could loss hp too (not likely) so unless I see real results, I'm not going to consider it.

I had a list of performance mod that I wanted to get but the cost of the product itself is close to a supercharger and noone has any dyno results, add installation and it's much cheaper going FI with much more torque and horses. After my research, my only option is to learn to love auto's and trade it in for a SLK55, both cheaper and proven performance.

I'm content with a well optioned SLK 350 with a nice set of wheels, AMG spoiler, Piecha and Kleyman1 modules. Ditto for a SLK 55. I can live with factory "stock" performance and be content. I'm pleased with the stock performance of the SLK 350 and the SLK 55 would be a pleasant surprise.

technically, the ideal headers would scavange each other, so you still want them to eventually merge...otherwise you'd lose torque. also, massive tube isn't always best, the exhaust gasses can actually flow SLOWER, with too large of a tube...

power wise, i think all the SLK 55 needs is a good set of equal length headers, other than that, i'd like to lighten the car. my number 1 mod would be lightweight wheels, as they are the easiest to resell, adds to appearance AND performance, and the least invasive.

For me, performance modifications to the engine should be limited to a pulley set for more boosts to not ruin my economy and hurt the warranty. Other things I'm thinking of are modifying the exhaust for better sounds.

Other vice I'm in for weight reducing. I have already reduced 60lbs from the car and I'm only filling the gas tank half which is another 60lbs. Other possible things to do are a smaller lighter battery and a set of racing seats. This could reduce about 60-70lbs. Lighter car should give better handling, braking and acceleration and possible better MPG hopefully.

Sounds like you have the right idea bejak. A set of racing seats will reduce weight and looks great but it'll be hard to find one with vents. Airscarf is a must for me, I used it everyday commuting to work. That's not an option for me.

I will show you the SLR's mate your right they still merge but are considerably larger than the SLK's and i don't quite know how i can describe the shape i think saying they are tapered is the best thing.

They start large and get smaller toward the point they join up just upstream of the exhaust.

Thats would be a cool mod for the SLK save some weight on the exhaust system

I have lots of things in my mind, 2 months ago I changed my stock rims and bought 19" staggered AMG style IV replicas with M PS2 tires that cost me more than 2100 Euros

My future modifications
1. 55 AMG rear lights (ordered)
2. AMG illuminated door sills (ordered)
3. Brabus style leds for doors (custom made)
4. Metallic door pins
5. Brabus roll-over bars
6. F1 style front bumper ( I have the AMG kit except front bumper)
7. Comand APS
8. Kleeman m271 kit
9. Turbocharger (still working on the idea)
10. LSD door kit
11. New interior leather (custom made)

I wont sell the car till I see a better option, looks there wont be any for a long time . I am not hurrying but Turbo and kleeman kit is still a question in my mind...

1- the Kleemann supercharger kit for the 3.5L engine once they make it fit the SLK (allegedly the R350 kit was due out by end of 2006).

2- Wheels if I can ever find a set I like that the whole world isn't running already.

3- Breitling Chrono Avenger to upgrade the 'time telling' vs the little analog clock in the dash.
