Default NOS Setup questionable.

OK....I know its been a while since I posted on doing this setup.

I'm now not sure I'm even going to attempt this.

All this waiting has made me rethink about doing this.

I have this paranoia that I'm going to blow up my motor if I do this mod.
I have spoken with my shop here and asked, "What if I buy a used Camaro (1997, 1998 or 1999 with the LS1 motor) and make it faster than my SLK32 would ever go. (My shop owner has a 1997 Camaro which runs 10 secs flat in the 1/4 with a 250 shot NOS). If I blow up that motor, 4k - 6k I have a new motor. If I blow up my SLK32's motor how much would that be to replace?

I have invested way too much time (Not like I did any of the current work on the car) and money into this car to add a mod that could potentially blow it up and negate all of the work that has been done to make it what it is today.

Thoughts appreciated!

NOS is fine in moderation, if setup correctly

NOS Has a bad rep mainly because it is so easy to add more.
The thrill is gone after a few pounds of NOS is used. This is where most get into trouble. Most 6cyl Eng can handle a 75 shot (in your case a boost controller would be needed to cut the NOS as the boost comes up.)

V8's can take a 125hp shot with no problems if you automate the engagement or follow a few simple rules
  1. never engage below 3000 rpm
  2. only engage at WOT
  3. let off the NOS before shift points
When Tuning the NOS remember not to use there fuel jet chart it is based on 43psi fuel pressure (MB uses 60psi)

I have my tuned very well, does not trip a check Eng light when in use. the ECU is happy.

I have seen first hand what happens with the mentality of lets just increase the jets for a little more. (do not do it) I have never hurt a Eng from NOS. My Jaguar Eng was built with the thought of running NOS (250hp to be exact) My SLK has never seen jetting over 115hp and the thrill is no longer there for me when I use it, but it still makes the same power I have it jetted for and any passengers are wowed by the NOS

This is the point that caused the issue, its very easy to change the jets to make more HP then the cycle repeats its self, bigger jets, bigger jets, bigger jets till something goes boom.

Regards
Bill T

My thought: every dime you spend on a car, truck, bike or any machine is money you should consider sacrificed to your entertainment and reward for you efforts that got you where you are today. Should you be lucky and recover 10% of the money when the macine is gone, can you say, I got my monies worth in fun and enjoyment and the memories and piturs that spark those memories, those relationships was money well spent. If return on investment is your goal for material gains, invest in yourself and your family.

Heck Tungster, start a motor replacement fund at the convenience stor. a jar wid a pitur of a poor child will be worth at least $50.00 a week, Bubba got $75 from three jars lass week. See tha attched pitur he uses on hiz jarz." My children needs toofis"

In moderation no problem on the slk.

But if u want an absolute monster, then ya get a firebird or camaro. I would supercharge it tho before i would Nos it. Superchargers are considerably cheaper on american V8's then any german car.

Then if u still want more, tweak it with Nos.

If you want to make a lot of power and still have it reliable, the LS1 SBC is your best bet. Before I moved to Germany I had a '02 SS Camaro that was putting down 463 Hp and 492 ft lbs., all that power was created off of a cam, headers with exhaust running no cats or sometimes dumped through a cut out, intake system, and a 75 shot. Talk about a monster, I used to love pulling that up to the line against all the high end european sports cars and revving the engine to 3k with the cut out open. The expression on the other drivers face was always priceless.
