SPEER Crank Pulley upgrade and remap extra 45bhp

Hi All,

So, finally got this done. Been thinking about it for a few months and....WOW!

This is a crank pulley "extension" and an ECU remap on a 1999 SLK 230 R170. Called here in Germany a Kompressor Kit. Gives you 45 more bhp / +70 Nm. So our girl should be around 238bhp. From 193bhp.

Things to mention:
1. The exisiting crank shaft pulley does not need to be removed. This larger crank shaft pulley simply fits onto the existing one and is secured by 6 bolts. See pics. + the new belt. Genius.

Company is called SPEER Chiping Tuning in Heilbronn Germany.

Website link:

Echtes Chiptuning ? In Baden-Württemberg ? Motortuning ? Leistungssteigerung

2. We had to measure are existing crank pulley - ours was 185mm. They send you the new pulley for you to put on, if you want to do it that way. Very easy job.

In the end, I decided to drive to Heilbronn at the last minute and have it all done there. Only 200 kms from me and it was my first nice free day this year. Almost no speed limits???? You betcha I wanted to get in the car and just drive.

The guy there - called Sacha Ruff - was really helpful. Had the ECU out in less than 1 minute. Remapped and new pulley on in record time. We test drove it together and bob's your uncle. The whole job took less than 1 hour. He knew what he was doing.

The result is +45bhp. acceleration is just crazy! The super charger sounds amazing.

Total cost around : 500 Euros / 522 USD or 350 GBP.

I have no affiliation to this guy, btw! Just wanted to let you all know, as promised, how we decided to do it.

Their website is in German.

Everything can be done by post. You can even send him your ECU to do and he'll send it back to you.

Speer is on ebay.
Shipping to the States is 20 Euros.
Shipping to UK 16 Euros.
He ships worldwide.

Like I said, the acceleration is off the hook! Not got her up too high top end cos my winters tyres have a speed rating of 210kph. Waiting for the summer tyres going on in a month or so to check out the top end. Not known for my patience - this is testing me!

Don't know what else I need to say. Just a report back.

Need to go and drive her again........see ya.

edit: Speer doesn't just do the R170....they do all models.

Hello. I'm afraid your post seems to be a kind of advertising, cause as far as I know a pulley upgrade and ECU remap can't put you up to 238 hp without a couple of additional mods such as a fuel pressure regulator swap, MAF swap, catalist removal and so on.

Hello 386998, thank you for your comments. I'm sorry if my post comes across as advertising. Believe me, I am not selling anything nor connected to these guys at all. I'm just an average "Jo" who loves her SLK.

As with any "mods" we have done on our car, I feedback to the community with my experiences. Good and bad. I know that I have learned so much from everyone who does the same on here.

All I can tell you is, I've done it on my car and am driving it as we speak. I suppose I'll have to eat my hat if my engine blows.

You have a good day now,

Jo

Thanks livefree,

I wasn't trying to start an incident, I promise! :-)

Because their website is in German, I translated the gist of it for those who might be interested in doing it too and maybe they don't speak German. So, I can see how it could sound "salesy". That - plus my passion for my girl!

Occupational hazard. Sorry. I'm a language teacher!

Hi mtimmy,

I'm very interested to hear how you get on with it.

We were going to put just the pulley on and then I decided to do the whole shebang because it was so close to us here in Germany.

The German friend of ours, who recommended it, did just the pulley and he's happy with it.

If you find the time, I would be grateful if you would let us know what you think.

Have fun!!!

I am no expert by any stretch of the imagination, however that would appear to be virtually impossible to achieve. Even with a remap, the forecast for the SLK 320 is 238bhp, from 218bhp. That's with a 3 litre engine, 50% bigger than the SLK 230.

If your SLK 230 really is now pushing out 238bhp then I would actually be genuinely concerned, unless I had made some fairly major alterations to cope with the increase.
Otherwise...one day...BOOM!

I hear ya.

Lots of people have done it in Germany and I'm very happy with my decision. So far. Let's see if later down the line, I'll be lamenting on here about my blown engine

I can only offer you my personal experience - because I've done it. The difference is really that big.

As with any mod....there are always risks involved. For me personally, it's worth the calculated risk.

To my mind, if I don't do it, I'll never know!

I value people's opinions (that's why I'm on here) and I'm the kinda person who needs to find out for herself.

The Earth was flat once, dontcha know

I am sure lots of people have done it, but did they change anything else?

The modification is going to put a lot of pressure on the cooling system one way and another, the Intercooler and the air intake side of things, not to mention fuel pump, ignition timing and exhaust considerations. Then of course, you need to stop, so existing brake system would need consideration also.

Remapping the engine and whacking on a pulley is just going to cause the engine huge stress and although the block can probably handle it, the other components are unlikely to manage it for any length of time without modification. My main concern would be that, come the hot weather, it will all simply get far, far too hot - potentially warping the head

I would look into the cooling side of things before the temperatures skyrocket, and get a few opinions from qualified mechanics on the subject. Just my two cents

Hi Gianp,

I'll try and help you as much as I can. Their site is all in German and I have translated the salient points for you below. I hope it helps you.

Before I go on, I want to make it absolutely and crystal clear that I am not connected to this company / selling ANYTHING / touting / vending / advertising / endorsing / nor getting ANY financial gain from AT ALL from this company. Nor asking for opinions on it. 😥 Phew! Is that clear? I'm doing this to help the community, purely and simply. There is a lot of information in German on the German websites over here and sometimes it's frustrating when you can't understand it. That alone is my motive.

I researched it a lot before I pushed the button. There's a lot of forums over here which gave good strong feedback on Speer - and not just Mercedes forums. 😆

For you sceptics, don't read on. For gianp, since you asked, here goes: this is under their FAQ section on their website:

Their web address: click here: Echtes Chiptuning ? In Baden-Württemberg ? Motortuning ? Leistungssteigerung

email address on their website is: kontakt@speer-chiptuning.de

You'll need to tell them your make and model, and which size your existing crank pulley is. 193mm or 185mm. Ours was a 185mm. Don't know what yours is.

Das KompressorKit inc pulley and belt and ECU remap. You can just get the pulley and belt.

Option 1 - Tell them your ECU number and they'll send you a pre-programmed tuning chip specifically for your car for you to install yourself. This usually involves some soldering. Instructions with pics are included. (OK if your German is good!!)

Option 2 - Send them your ECU and they'll do it for you. Normally 4 days (for Germany). You pay shipping, of course. Checked on their ebay.de listing - 16 Euros shipping to Italy - DHL. Might be more. Search on ebay.de for Speer Chiptuning and their listing will come up.

Option 3 - Arrange an appointment to go to Heilbronn in Germany and they'll do it. (Not an option if you're in Italy, I presume?)

Option 4 - They can "lend" you the OBD programming device and you programme it yourself at home. Instructions included. + 49 Euros. You need a laptop with Windows. You can buy the OBD programming device for 89 Euros.

There's loads more info on their website. There are, of course, other tuning companies available. I can only give you the benefit of my personal experience with these guys. I had this done in May 2015, prolly 3 or 4,000 kilometres ago and I'm still trucking! Very happy with the results.

Sacha was the name of the guy I dealt with. I did it all in German. He may be able to do this in English. I know some other members have done / are doing it and they're English speakers.

BTW.....got her up to 240kph today - nowhere near red line and she still had some oomph left in her but I had to back off cos of traffic 😢

Hope that helps! Let me know how you find it once you've had it done. Interested to know.

Thank you so much Clown!!
But my question was where you bought the PULLEY (the items you posted pictures before).
Reguarding the ECU I understood and I think the best option is to get from them ECU and install by myself.
But, where to buy the PULLEY?
Thanks Clown :-)
P.S. I don't take care if you gain money from them :-P

I also bought the pulley and belt kit , takes an hour to fit and gives good results out of the box , I'm calling in to get the re map done by Sacha in a couple of weeks on my way to the ring from France .
Sacha speaks excellent English , or he answers emails in excellent English , either way he's easy to deal with and very prompt .
I've also enlarged the intake for the air box and fitted a larger intercooler , half as big again , both of these were more for reliability than performance , although they should help after the remap .
I'm currently trying to decide on exhaust options though being right hand drive the manifold is going to be the sticky point .
If I get decent power gains I'll sort the suspension later

Update

I now have the re map to compliment the pulley kit , my opinions are that the pulley alone increases the bottom end torque noticibly but leaves the car a little breathless . I called into speers to have the re map done on my way to the nurburgring a couple of weeks ago and it definately makes a difference to the top end power , maybe at the expense of a little torque .
The car now pulls cleanly all the way around the rev range and doesn't suffer the top end drop off of power .
I only did a couple of laps of the ring as it was 36 degrees most of the day , as it has been for the last month in mainland Europe , but I've had no problems since the mods and the car has covered almost 4 thousand miles on a few long journeys in the past month .

Let us leave aside the serious concerns of what an extra 45bhp would do this engine, which is nearing its limits, and ask what exactly is being churned out from this kit - ie, why has no one carried out a dyno run?
