They're not a big deal - any major online used car site lists a vechicle's VIN along with other details on the car. Prospective buyers look for it expressively for the purpose of checking it's history using a service such as Carfax.

While far from infallible, a VIN search can reveal such things as whether the car has been declared a total loss by insurance, the number of previous owners, odometer irregularities, accidents, even service history in some instances. Good things to know when laying down hard-earned money on a used vechicle
