Default How to save Fuel thread

Along with correct tire air pressure and better Air Filters...

I heard on the radio this morning to only fill your car tank to half full when you get gas.

A full tank carries extra weight and uses more gas.

I always fill up to check gas mileage.

Hmmmm, I may start doing the "half a tank trick."

Where do you fall in the Gas Price issue???

I only fill up every two weeks, although it would be nice if the cost of gasoline/petrol is cheaper.

Driver slower is the most obvious, Jeremy clarkson proved that point in Episode of 2 of season 11. It doesnt mean if a person that drives a economical car that he or she are consuming more from a 1.8l car than a person driving a 400hp sports sedan who drives in a slower manner.

Heard it from the radio this morning that police are giving out less speeding ticket due to the fact that people are driving slower to save on gas. It says driving at 100km/h will likely save 20% on gas compare to 120km/h in avg.

To be honest, it doesn't really bother me.

The world is changing and so are our lives, you either move with it or fall behind.

I do agree petrol prices are rediculous but if i want to drive fast, i do it, otherwise i just drive the way i've always been driving. I do admit i havent been going out as much though.

Yeah, almost $9 here as well - I'm glad my SLK is living in the states where I feel like $4.00 is a really good deal!

One problem with not having a full tank of gas is that you get water vapor condensation on the tank which can corrode the tank.

At least that is how it used to be in the past. Don't really know today with closed systems and I'm not sure what the tank is made of now-a-days.

How to get extra miles...

Train your transmission to shift mid range (auto). For manual same applies.

Buy gas without ethanol mixture.

Folks at work are paying more for a gallon of water than a gallon of gasoline. It cracks me up when they complain about the cost of gas.

Sixty five dollar fill ups get my attention. With the four possible choices for this poll, the closest truthful answer for me was answer four. But I'm concerned. I don't have to drive long distances to work, etc. I've started to combine trips, drive 60 mph on the interstate. I'm trying to conserve. I'm pissed at our dependence on oil, number one, and foreign oil, number two. We've lost control.

I blame Canada for US prices.

Anyway, notice how the price rises with the media / politician screeching about C02. It's new wave... and been going on since the turn of the century.

Yeah, same here - gas prices are not killing me, but they certainly have my attention - even coming from the higher prices we've had in Europe since I left the states in 2000, it hurts to see prices over $4 at the pump when I go "home".

Agree wholeheartedly with your "piss-ed-ness", and unfortunately I don't see a short term solution. Long term should be more straightforward - start building some nuclear plants, see what we can do with wind power, remove the restrictions on domestic drilling, and above all, manage consumption and get rid of the NIMBY syndrome (I'd love to see a "distance" surcharge applied to power - further you are from the plant, more you pay, and a "dirty" surcharge for the coal plants.)

Unfortunately, that's not the best for my mid-term plans involving upgrading to a '55 at the end of 09.

None of the polls answers fit for me. I definitely watch how i drive more in traffic with the higher gas, but when the roads are clear, i still step on it...as evidenced by my ticket for 94+ mph on the freeway the other day...

i pay more for tickets and insurance than for gas...so that's still my primary concern.

BTW, my SLK 55 can get me about 19 mpgs... CLK 500 gets me about 17...and my minivan with handicap ramp and lowered floor is at about 12 mpg. For me the bigger engine in the SLK lets me cruise more efficiently at high speed so it ends up saving me money in the long run since i put a lot of highway miles in.

Totally agree...except the driving long distances to work part. Waitin' on you Steve.

You can start blaming China and India more. Their numbers for new cars on the road are going through the roof!!! Plus, if China ever decides to call in the money we (US) owes them, we're screwed.

Back to what Don said...we've totally lost control. (italics added)

Glad to see no one's opted for regular fuel though. Might as well put sand in the tank.

To fill my Kleemann here in Sweden with Shell V-Power is right now 140$ for 65 lit.
If I fill it with 98 octane - 130$
But we are still driving
I spent 1850$ on our roadtripp to Barcelona last summer (av cons 1,5 l/10 km)

I don't drive as much as I would like. Thats hard for me. There are lots of great roads that seem to be made for the SLK in Oregon. I would drive a lot more if it did not cost me $70 to fill up. I sometimes feel guilty driving for fun when others are trying to conserve.

I can afford gas so it's not killing me... however I wouldn't say it's not an issue.

At times, I drive more conservatively and the SLK55 can hit 25mpg on the highway. Done it before. In the city, not so much. closer to 18mpg.

Here's the financial impact as I see it.

If we assume gas prices are $1 more now and that the SLK has a 17 gallon tank...
That's $17 more each fillup.

Fill up every two weeks = $442 additional dollars a year
Fill up once a week = $884 additional dollars a year

I'm guessing most of us can afford it but that sure doesn't mean we want to pay for it.
