| Unfortunately, our family has come across a problem. One of our primary everyday cars, an 1992 E300D 2.5 Turbodiesel, suddenly stopped on the highway. Unfortunately, the dealer indicated that the crankshaft is broken and gave an engine rebuild estimate of 12K USD and 5k additional for labor. This seems like an exorbitant amount of money and I was wondering whether this seemed like a right estimate. For 17k, it might just be better to try to find another used mercedes to buy instead of spending so much. Thanks in advance for all help. |

| Sorry to hear smoothbnz. Isn't it rare for a crankshaft to break? I agree that the 17K be used to purchase another vehicle.

| For 17 thousand dollars there are other used mercedes cars in that range, I wonder if the likes of the C36 or C43 AMG are knocking on those prices. Recently I had a friend with a 180,000km 1993 SL600 engine and gearbox get toast, basically stopped in the middle of the road and is not working. A new engine will cost more than the work he did at an independent Mercedes garage in which they got him a second hand engine with 60,000km and rebuilt his gearbox for around 4,000 dollars.

| Thanks for the replies guys! We've talked it over and decided it's best to just scrap the car. This car is used just for transportation over long distances for guests and taking luggage and whatnot, so a high mpg diesel is usually what we get. However, we've decided that for now we don't need it and can do without the car considering my new SLK is on the way anyway. Nonetheless, thanks for the replies, again. |

| that's an exorbitant price. get a quote from an independent. A newly rebuilt engine is usually around $6000 for that vintage, labor being another $1500 or so. have you checked the benzworld forum? |

| The crankshaft didn't just randomly break. It was a combination of things. The guests that were using the car, embarrassingly, filled petrol in a diesel car and also put water on a hot engine, which might have led to the head cracking. Next time we will be careful with lending our cars to others. |

| Never, ever lend a car to anyone ever. That would be my advice ![]() It almost sounds like they were deliberately "dumb". Oh, and sorry to hear about your troubles... |
