Default Audi R8

Had to take the Passat in for a major steering noise and as I was leaving I looded over at the Audi showroom and saw this. It had already been sold but the buyer had to leave it with the dealer for a week so people could come and see it.

Edit: I meant R8, my bad!

Thank you for sharing, I first saw the concept of this car back in summer of 2004 at the Audi Museum in Ingloshtad (sp) but presently I cannot justify paying around 150,000 usd for a car that acts to be a budget lambo and sports a rather weak 4.2l displacement.

I mean certain people might think its an exotic, but to my eye's its nothing special. A good alternative would be a CLK63 AMG Blackseries not that I am ( MB ) biased, it seems to me its a gentleman's car and is conservative rather than flashy.

Thanks for the pics.

I agree with alroumi when it comes to the R8 i don't see the fuss about it at all its a great looking machine no doubt but its not the supercar they (Audi) are making it out to be, few things in life shout out I've not done as well as i wanted to than purchasing one of these cars.

The others being buying a 500 type Mercedes or a Porsche Coxster.

Its been over exaggerated, okay it works fine in the track but then you do miss the straightline. If you would see the 0-250kmh video its fast from zero to 160ish but then slows down quiet a bit.

Dan, thanks for agreeing with me.

I'm sorry, but in my opinion, Mercedes Benz has nothing in its lineup that competes with the R8. The CLK63 AMG Blackseries is still a CLK with the rear seats thrown out and I don't believe there will be many folks cross-shopping the two (as you aren't either, it seems). The R8 is rather a natural competitor to Porsche Carrera 4S, and it appears to be a formidable one indeed. Not too shabby for Audi's first attempt in this segment. Porsche may just have to buy VW to get rid of the threat.

As far as displacement goes... The upcoming R8 RS with its 5 liter V10 should leave nothing to be desired in this department.

Good points but if its competing with the C4S shouldnt it be priced in the same category as I find the R8 to have somewhat of the "exotic car" pricing.

I needed a good laugh today...thanks! right on the money Dan...That awful side panel is reminiscent of the stick on body cladding of the Chevy Avalanche types...give me good clean lines, and *** appeal.....there is nothing exotic here, yawn.....and pricey to boot. Same reason I would choose a C63 or a M3 over an RS4.

I'm not a fan of Black Series cars at all, they are nothing but a marketing exercise for the simple fact that as anybody in the know will tell you its not possible to convert a standard sports car into a balls out rocket ship, so in that sense i agree with you.

But i agree with the others when it comes to the R8 itself, its nothing but a pointless waste of time a half-assed sports car for people who cannot afford Lambo's just like the Coxster is for the 911 and that makes it all the more ironic that they have thrown supercar pricing at the thing, it will not even make the P car sweat.

When i see it Jeremy Clarkson pop's into my head with his comment on the Coxster - "It might say Porsche on the back but it goes more like a porch" i think it translates well to the Audi.

That being said perhaps the RS will be better but i'm not holding my breath.

Nothing like a big sticker to cover up that awkward sail panel!

maybe the boxster, but the Cayman S is quite the sportscar, much more so than the 911. In fact, the only standard production 911 i would take over a cayman s would be a Turbo.

I had considered quoting Clarkson regarding the R8, but he's often just trying to be funny and, taken out of context, that's often what lingers in people's heads and gives a car a bad reputation. His review of the Cayman on Top Gear is a case in point. It wasn't a bad review at all, and he was just trying to find a funny angle naming it the Coxster in order to poke fun at the producer of the show who had just bought one.

Anyway, since you've quoted Clarkson, here's his opinion about the R8. I have rarely seen him more enthusiastic about a car than here, and that's comparing it to his very own, brand-spanking new Gallardo Spyder.

Yes, the demand for that car is ridiculous, I've seen one on ebay for $180,000. Aren't they suppose to be $100K? Definitely not worth the price but I guess I'm the minority here, the pictures does nothing for me but I've seen in in real life and I have to say it's a looker, much more then the 911. Used gallardo are going for $150,000 here and if I were in the market, I would definitely get the G-ride over the R8.

I'm surprised many of you dislike the R8. I think it's a well done auto especially for Audi's first attempt. Of course, I wouldn't pay anything over sticker on the thing. I think a used 1-2 yr old with low mileage would be a good value. Maybe 70-85k and I'd be truly interested.
