Other Hobbies

I know there's a post elsewhere about "Other Toys" but I didn't see one for "Other Hobbies". I know that some consider our cars as "a hobby" but this thread is meant to address hobbies other than cars/trucks/motorcycles.

Don't be shy. Let your freak flag fly and show us what you do when you don't have a wrench or OBD reader in your hand.

So here goes:

I make bread. I even go so far as to grind my own flour. Wheat, spelt and rye are my primary grains (so far).

That doesn't include white flour as I don't want to spend $50+ to buy a sieve small enough to get the bran out of the whole wheat grain that I grind. I only use unbleached white flour (and that is hard to find--long explanation but I can elaborate if needed). Suffice it to say, just because it says it's unbleached, it ain't necessarily so.

Here are my latest work(s) of art:

This is what <1/4 teaspoon (not a misprint) of yeast does to 1 kg (2.2 lb) of unbleached white flour (50%), whole wheat flour (25%) and spelt flour (25%) (I grind my own flour except for the unbleached white) when allowed to work for 12 hours. It started out at a bit less than the 1 litre mark (where the vertical red line starts).

On the counter ready to be divided

In the baskets to proof (covered) for another hour while the oven heats
[

And here they are after 45 minutes
[

and opened up (yah, I know: out of focus) but they're already in the freezer so no new pics.
]

Thanks for looking.

Interesting, I started making my own bread a few months ago and have had nice results with simple recipes but don't go as far as you with grinding the flour. I'll have to experiment a bit more. Your loaf does look nice

When I can't enjoy my main hobby (wrenches & code readers), I run moonshine, prostitution rings, and smuggle contraband. And when I'm not playing Mafia III on xBox One, I enjoy cooking. I've been making beef jerky for about 20 years now and someday hope to put it on the market. Hey if they can do it, so can I.

We have a bread machine and it's not nearly as "grass roots" as the above post, but yields some tasty results nonetheless. Oh and I am in the process of putting the finishing touches on our backyard "Casa De Chickens", which is insulated, heated, and soon will have running water. I can tell you, chicks really dig Mercedes.

I tried my hand at San Francisco-style sourdough a few years ago, but it wasn't as successful as I'd like, and now my local groceries are carrying the real thing, so its kind of a moot point. Perhaps King Arthur or Bob's Red Mill might have unbleached flour.

K.A. flour does have "real" unbleached flour (which I researched-->not avail in Canada). Go for it.

Sourdough does require a certain commitment (ie: maintaining the starter). I would like to make s.d. bread but I don't want that commitment.

Variations to consider are "poolish" or "biga" based bread. No starter commitment req'd.

Not intended that way. It was just an attempt to start a "community thread". Why not post some pics of your fishing equipment? Lures that are a favourite. Lures that are junk.

We've all got lures (those that fish do) that the only thing you've caught on them is either seaweed or the back of your pants Let's see 'em.

Always going to happen with popular picks.

Wait until the subject of drones comes up.

The minions will be here like a shot.

Except me.

Still mastering the paper dart.
I mean, why throw away a good concept just for tech.

I like fishing too:

This is a 1961 Evinrude 9.9 two stroke motor that I inherited from my dad.

9.9hp may seem an odd hp rating BUT at least in Ontario (and probably elsewhere), any boats that were driven by 10hp motor or above had to be registered. Hence, 9.9 hp was extremely desireable as your boat didn't have to be registered with the govmint (and have to pay another tax errrrr fee .

In all these years, the ONLY repairs it's needed is to have both condensors replaced. Stupid me, I used to store it in my garage. Winter/summer/winter/summer hot/cold cycles eventually caused them to crack.

It's a tank .

Radio Controlled aircraft - (excluding choppers) but pretty much everything else that flies including turbine powered jets (as much excitement as driving a fast car). Sold off most of my aircraft before leaving Australia but have begun to slowly rebuild the squadron

Photography - Nikon D810 with a range of top end lenses. Sony Rx100 MKIII - my 'carry / holiday' camera and an A2 sized photo printer - love being able output what I have produced and hang it on a wall (will soon add a quadcopter with a camera).

Learning to program Ardunio and about how electronics work - always wanted to better understand electronics and need to stimulate my old brain.

I used to do 1/35 scale plastic model kits but haven't done so in a few years because of time constraints. The work desk, tools and airbrushes are in a state of hibernation for now, although I do use them to work on the many small chores at home and on the R171.

Below is a sample. Can you ID the "tank" and its version and country of origin?

Here's another one: country of origin, tank name and version?

and another ....

I still have more than 20 kits in their original boxes, waiting ....

I was very fortunate to be able to do circuit racing (road course racing) at club level for several years.

(yes, slight ricer bias. The club I raced with were open to anything Asia built)

As I raced less, I wanted to give something back to the sport and trained to be a Clerk of Course (Race Director), which I do during the race season at circuits around the UK. This has also enabled me to still get a bit of seat time doing Safety Car duties.

I still maintain my race license, with the intention of doing the occasional race, or when Toto phones me...

regards
Gareth

I used to fly RC planes with Jono (my son), but I never really became anything more than vaguely competent at flying them (Jono was always better than me at that). We sold most of the planes we had left over from that late last year.

I also have a passing interest in photography, but don't even own a DSLR now (Jono has a DSLR, and I leave him to grab the better photos at our local SLK meets now - when he's there).

So, combining both of those interests has always appealed to me, but I didn't really have the boot space to carry one of the DJI quadcopters before... until they released the Mavic Pro! So, here's what I got for Christmas...

There were supply problems with the Mavic Pro, so I got the Hubsan H502E (the white one on the left) just to practice with... and then I managed to get lucky and scored a DJI Mavic Pro the week before Christmas! I'm slowly learning what it's capable of, and still need more time to practice with it. The weather isn't that great here in the UK right now, although I did get a clear day over the New Year period and managed to shoot the following footage with it...
