Default Your first performance modification

What was the first car you modified for performance and what did you do, I’m not talking body kits or tires, but mechanical.

I fried a pilot bearing in my Opel back in the seventies so I got mod crazy. After prying the transmission from the engine it was obvious they both needed rebuilding. The transmission input shaft was fused to the crank shaft.

After tare down, here’s the major modifications:

Engine (4 cylinder)

cylinders bored
new crank, balanced
new pistons and rods, balanced
new cam shaft, balanced.
Flywheel balanced
Timing gears balanced

Transmission:

New input shaft
Performance clutch pressure disk and throw out bearing

After install put on:

New header and a flow thru exhaust (pre cat era)
New intake manifold with two Webber dual side drafts with velocity stacks
New re-arc'ed high performance distributor
A bunch of other stuff I don’t remember

The thing ran and sounded like a monster with no vibration.

It was my '76 Alfa Romeo GT Junior. I got it as a 1600 cc and after all the work, it was a competition 2000 engine, modified with all original competition parts of the day, all moving parts balanced.

Transmission, brakes and suspension received the same treatment.... I had a 3cm ground clearance under the engine...

Racing exhaust, 100W bulbs for the high beams, no electronics

The only modification on the exterior was a golden metallic burgundy paint from Porsche and in the inside, 2 Corbeau racing seats instead of the standard ones.

The only problem was that, at just over 200 kph, the nose was lifting

It could, when floored on a good quality dry road surface, spin the wheels till I changed for the fourth gear...

Nothing special, just the regular common mods that everyone else does, re-mapped ECU, cat back exhaust, headers, air intake, on my old e36 M3, gave it to my brother and he threw a turbo in it.

No performance mods for the SLK350 yet, too much money for too little gain. I might wait until Kleemann comes out with the supercharger, that seems to be the best mod for the money, actually the cheapest gain would be to trade it in for a SLK55.

It was 1968. An exhaust modification I did on a 1965 FIAT 600.
I replaced the silencer with a copper tube. No silencer at all but fantastic sound.
A bit too loud so I had to put the original silencer back after some test drives during nights.

I'm with alroumi...K&N air filters has been the extent of my performance modding. First one was on a '96 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4, then every other vehicle since. My wife's Vue is the first time I haven't seen any significant improvement.

My first serious modification was a 1.6 Miata.

I bought it stock from the factory

Then I placed an air filter
and then.....................................

Greddy turbo kit, E-manage, and many other stuff

I have designed the whole kit and installed it by myself and I have done all the dyno tests myself.. The car was 1.6 and had 110 hp and after the installation had 180 hp and 25 kg torgue at 4000 rpm. (0-60miles 6.9sec).
The turbo was running at 0.5 bar .

Very nice car and I have driven it many times in tracks....
