What a fun few days! New SLK owners in Denver
Well, my wife wanted something more fun to drive than her 4Runner. So the search was on. We drove a lot of fun cars. Boxster, Z3, even a Lexus IS300 with a 5 speed. Neat car! But at the end of the day, the right balance of fun, sport and practicality at a surprisingly affordable price was a 2003 SLK 230, lovingly maintained by a young couple who are having a baby soon. So, we snapped it up! We looked at quite a few SLKs once we decided that's what we wanted. This one was by far the best one. 75,000 miles, but in better shape than some we drove with 50k. We felt really lucky to get it. And it's nice to find something that is ideal for us yet still inexpensive enough we could buy it for cash. Can't beat that! Loads of people have been shocked when we told them what it cost. I think there will be a lot of folks here in Denver looking at the SLK ads on craigslist! Amazing value for the money.
We autocross as a hobby- the whole family, but the SLK is not destined for a tortured life of race rubber and dodging cones. It's just too nice for that. It will be our fun street car. Almost certain to remain completely, or almost completely stock... at least for a while. We're really enjoying the little thing and it's so much fun for me to see my wife so excited about a car! I can hardly stand it! She'll get to drive it to work since she has the lame commute. The automatic with the sport shift is ideal for her highway traffic nightmare. And I suspect the trip won't be so bad with the top down and the tunes playing in the SLK.
I've already gotten a good bit of info from this forum both while looking at SLKs and since getting out little gem home last night. Good to know there's a community on the Internet to turn to for info. We already love this little car and plan to keep it for a long time!

Thank you everyone! I did snap one decent-ish pic of it last night.
I'll take a couple of better ones this weekend. It is kind of the quintessential R170 SLK. Silver definitely seemed to be the most popular color for them.

Have you autox'ed with the Porsche Club out at Hi Plains? Have several old friends there and plan to that at some point.
Rick
Hey Rick,
No, I've only done SCCA events so far. My wife and son and now driving my old E Stock MR2 now as I have my FSP car running well enough to do events. Not real fast yet, but coming together. A friend offered my daughter a co-drive in his daughter's Junior Kart, so the whole clan is going out and racing now. It's a ton of fun.
I would like to get out to High Plains for a lapping day or something before long. I think it would be a blast!
