Default 2008 or 2009 navigation DVDs...?

Hi all,

I ordered my 2007 SLK350 in Summer of 2006, and picked it up on October 2007.

The maps on the DVD are really old, and does not even show streets that have existed for a few years.

When I asked the dealership about an updated DVD back in 2007, I was told that a new one was not available.

Now that it's July 2008, can I get a new DVD somewhere?

1. Should I just check with the dealership again?
2. Can I buy a DVD from one of you guys?
3. Can I get a free copy legally from anyone?
4. Can I download it from M-B and burn it myself?

Thanks!

shahedC...

The newest one is version 7.0 and is called the "2008" version, though the maps are dated from late 2007. (It normally takes a while to get the disks out). If you got your car in October, it's probably at least one version behind.

The part number for the 08 disk is BQ 6 46 0232.

Just eject the disk and it will say right on it the version and part number, then compare yours with the above.

You can get it directly from Navteq for $199, which is probably cheaper than the dealer.

This rather long URL will get you to the SLK disk for your car.
http://www.navigation.com/is-bin/INT...4AAAET3SlSHM.T

If you go into the "Map Reporter" section, you can look up a road that you know doesn't exist with your current map disk. That will tell you if it's now in the map or not.

Cheers!

Dan

$199 for an updated NAV disc is a good price. Chances are you'll be disappointed with the updates from the version you have. It takes years to get new roads, even major roads, included.

Check this thread: http://www.slkworld.com/where-get-r1...vd-comand.html

You may be able to get the Nav DVD for free using the DTB no. since you have a 2007 version.

well, the dealer told me $200 as well, so if that's the only one at the only price, that's the one I'll end up getting.

I'm surprised that there are no (legal) copies available? Or is the system copy protected? Or are the copies forbidden?

Does Navteq really rely on DVD map sales to keep their business alive? How come the portable GPS manufacturers have systems that don't have to be updated? (or do they?)

The dealer and NavTeq are the same disk. The NavTeq one even comes with the "Mercedes" jacket, but if your dealer is the same price may as well get it from there.

Like all commercial software, you can't legally copy it. They spend money to update the disks each year, so makes sense you'd have to pay to get the benefit of their work. "Most" of the better portable GPS units actully do have updates. Garmin for instance also updates their map disks every year. Actually, they pretty much all use either NavTeq, TeleAtlas or both. The features may be different (manufactures can buy different feature sets, and coverage), but the basic data is actually the same.

$199 is a good price for an upgrade disk by the way. My Toyota was closer to $350, and my Kenwood was over $400!

Cheers!

Yeah, what he said. TomTom is the same, but they basically guarantee you the "first" upgraded mapset for free. Since this is licensed software, it's illegal to copy it. FYI, and I found out the hard way, dumping a new map on your TomTom wipes out your "favorites"!? One of the other cool features of the TomTom that I wish other manufactures would adopt is their "map corrections". Basically they (TomTom) send out updates to the map every week, and you can even subscribe to "user" submitted corrections. Here in London, there seems to be a religious following for TomTom updates - they get traffic works "added" before I even see the signs!
