Default I want to drill a hole in my SLK 350!

So I bought a couple of little silver stick-on hooks and put them on the back wall just behind and a bit below the wind breaker screen and midway between the seat and the center console. We used them to hang our hats. One on each side. Problem is that the sticky goo kind of melted and one of the hooks fell off leaving a gooey patch.

So I was thinking what I should do is get a very small screw and drill a hole in that back panel and thread the screw in to hold the hooks.

Oh, wait a minute, what the heck would I be drilling into? The gas tank? Or something else vital?

This from Dan earlier.

"That wall is magnesium so any drilling would be very nasty indeed.

Not only the explosive dust but extremely severe contact corrosion."

I think you might want to pass!

Can you show us a photo of where you intend to apply this? Is it on the rear bulkhead?

Don't worry, there's a load of expensive electronics before you hit the gas tank

Don't you have hooks on the back of the seats?

Clean off all of the sticky stuff. Go to Lowes or Home Depot & get a tube of PL Ultra. Rough up the contact areas with a bit of sand paper & apply.
The PL Ultra is a one part urthane that cures in aprox 24 hours & should fasten your hooks sufficiently.

Yeah that little bump that anything keeps falling off of? I think someone mentioned making a little loop hanging a real hanger back there. I suppose I could do that, but there really isn't much room behind the seat. A lot better between the seat and the center console.

Maybe tomorrow I will take a picture.

So if I drill in there and I hit some electronics, I should stop drilling?

Your either gonna hit the bulkhead and probably cause a small explosion (seriously not joking here, dust and drill heat = very bad) or you will plow into some of those roof control electronics that Woolly has a pic of.

Either way its generally nasty.

If you power your drill from the 12V outlet/cigarette lighter, it should stop automatically, once you hit the expensive stuff, and fuses start blowing (mind you, if you are lucky and hit the roof hydraulics, the oil should put any subsequent fire out (or it could make it worse))

Is there already a coat hook behind the seats? I have one on mine.

Default Those little seat back hooks?

mtiede and all:

I don't know what the existing plastic (?) hooks on the back of the seats are intended to be used for. The might hold a light shirt on a thin wire hanger, but that is about it. Does anybody have an idea what they are used for, and why they are there?

Now, If I needed a better hook back there, I would try to buy or fabricate a bigger and stronger hook to replace the existing one, using the same screw hole. And I would retain the stock hook, so I could return my care to pure stock should I want to sell it.

I have a regular plastic hanger with the SLKWorld hooded sweatshirt hanging from the back of the passenger seat hook.

The plastic hanger has been modified: the plastic hook from the hanger has been cut off and small hole drilled on the horizontal piece at the middle. A fishing line has been threaded through to form a loop. The loop works better on the small OEM hook at the back of the seat and has less tendency to be knocked loose.

Yes, the trunk is good. Plus, my wife is so short that her seat is forward enough to actually put a kiddie seat back there.

suggestion:
1. Use a black plastic hook with a flat square back (found in housewares e.g. Target stores)
2. Stick a black velcro type attachment (the side with the many hooklets on it)
3. This should stick to the fabric part at the rear bulkhead of the cockpit
This may be strong enough to hold the weight of the average hat and be easy enough to remove as needed.

Wow, I'm going to have to look at that bulkhead again. My recollection was that it was leather (or something with a surface like leather. I didn't thinkg there was anything that velcro would stick to...

IIRC, it's the same black velour-type carpeting material. The upper 11cm border is molded plastic but below this is carpeting-type material.

addendum: I just tried with the small velcro hooklets that's sewn on my lunch bag and it won't stick well to the carpet-like material. May have to use a different velcro that has a different design on the hooklets.
