sorry, a bit here, but how do you manage to travel with a passenger AND a dog?

Our dog usually sleeps on the floor once the car starts moving, or sits in one of our laps and looks out the window. She's not that big.

My boyfriend will be meeting me in Cleveland, so will be driving alone in our SLK with Noodle (the dog) from NY. I keep our SUV in Cleveland for my business, so if we find that it's too difficult to go in the SLK, we can always switch it with the bigger car.

Yes, there have been a number of optional leather packages offered in R171 history. Some of them have been quite soft. Ours has only the standard leather in black, which was very hard initially. The advantage is that ours had none of those wrinkles in the upper part of the side bolsters that I have seen on other R171s, and it is softening with time and repeated applications of 303 and Meguair's leather cleaner and conditioner. If anybody know of a better leather softening agent, please let me know.
