| Not sure what model you have but you may want to pull the cabin filter and check for anything unusual. I had this problem some time ago and found some leaves and pine needles in the fan unit, made a hell of a noise and i thought i needed a new fan unit. |

| I have an R171, a 2007 SLK350 to be exact. Took delivery in Oct 2006. Could you please clarify what the "cabin filter" is? Or provide a picture, and drawn an arrow pointing to it? Thanks, ~shahedc . |

| Not sure where its located in the 350 but it filters the cabin air much like the filter in a central air unit in a house. Allot of time leaves and stuff make there way into the duck work and into the fan unit. On the 230's its located under the glove box, your manual should give you the location or someone with more knowledge of the 350's will chime in. |

Th enoise started on the way to work. We didn't have enough time to turn back home to swap for the sensible saloon, so were stuck with the noise all weekend. It stops when the climate control fan is turned off. Thankfully the weather isn't too hot or cold, so we'll be OK with it turned off for the weekend, but it would be really nice to fix it while we're away. Any more tips on getting to the filter will be appreciated, will I need tools?

May I suggest that you post this query in the ask Dan (premium) section. I am not sure if it is the cabin filter or the fan itself that maybe causing the noise. One may be able to get a glimpse of the "fan blades" by removing the battery compartment cover and see if there's any obstruction or malalignment when the cabin fan is turned on. The fan blades can be observed in the compartment aft of the battery, through a rectanguar opening.

Made sure the ignition was off (keys in my pocket) before I stuck my hand in the fan! I'm suprised there's not a mesh screen to stop debris entering the fan. Maybe one for a future project.

| I've got the same thing going on with my 2002 SLK. Guess I need to find out how to access the fan on mine now. Probably a leaf also, since I've got about 20 oak trees around my house!

| Richardleeds has the right-hand-drive (RHD) vehicle so it's on the left side of his vehicle. It will be on the right side of the R171 in a US spec vehicle (left-hand-drive or LHD).

Good point. It's on the passenger side, wherever you are in the world. Quote:
The links at the top of the thread are for getting to the other side of the fan from the inside. This is how you can remove debris that has passed through the fan blades and is caught between the fan and the cabin filter. Requires tools, patience and draught strips!
