Default help: fan noise

hey guys,

everytime i post something here, I always get a quick response..

so here goes...

when I turn on the fan inside the car, I hear a rattling sound, as if the fan is just getting old and out of alignment or something.

thoughts?

maybe i should get it checked out at the dealership's service center.

thanks,
~shahedc

Not sure what model you have but you may want to pull the cabin filter and check for anything unusual. I had this problem some time ago and found some leaves and pine needles in the fan unit, made a hell of a noise and i thought i needed a new fan unit.

I have an R171, a 2007 SLK350 to be exact. Took delivery in Oct 2006.

Could you please clarify what the "cabin filter" is? Or provide a picture, and drawn an arrow pointing to it?

Thanks,

Not sure where its located in the 350 but it filters the cabin air much like the filter in a central air unit in a house. Allot of time leaves and stuff make there way into the duck work and into the fan unit. On the 230's its located under the glove box, your manual should give you the location or someone with more knowledge of the 350's will chime in.

An amzing co-incidence, the same happened to me this morning. I came into work itching to ask for help on here because we're going away for a weekend in the Dales straight from work.

Th enoise started on the way to work. We didn't have enough time to turn back home to swap for the sensible saloon, so were stuck with the noise all weekend. It stops when the climate control fan is turned off. Thankfully the weather isn't too hot or cold, so we'll be OK with it turned off for the weekend, but it would be really nice to fix it while we're away.

Any more tips on getting to the filter will be appreciated, will I need tools?

May I suggest that you post this query in the ask Dan (premium) section. I am not sure if it is the cabin filter or the fan itself that maybe causing the noise. One may be able to get a glimpse of the "fan blades" by removing the battery compartment cover and see if there's any obstruction or malalignment when the cabin fan is turned on. The fan blades can be observed in the compartment aft of the battery, through a rectanguar opening.

That fixed it. Took battery cover off, reached into fan chmaber and slowly turned it by finger until I got to a point where a small leaf was stuck between the blades. Will post pics later.

Made sure the ignition was off (keys in my pocket) before I stuck my hand in the fan!

I'm suprised there's not a mesh screen to stop debris entering the fan. Maybe one for a future project.

Glad it got sorted.

Here are the pictures.

Undo the battery cover using three locking keys here, turn through 90 degrees.

This is the inside of the fan housing

Reach in and turn the fan with your fingers - make sure the key is in your pocket so there is no chance of the fan switching on!

Here is the culprit ...

I've got the same thing going on with my 2002 SLK. Guess I need to find out how to access the fan on mine now. Probably a leaf also, since I've got about 20 oak trees around my house!

Richardleeds has the right-hand-drive (RHD) vehicle so it's on the left side of his vehicle. It will be on the right side of the R171 in a US spec vehicle (left-hand-drive or LHD).

Good point. It's on the passenger side, wherever you are in the world.

Its a different part of the same system. My pictures show how to get to the fan intake from under the bonnet (hood). It doesn't need any tools and is the first place for debris to cause a problem.

The links at the top of the thread are for getting to the other side of the fan from the inside. This is how you can remove debris that has passed through the fan blades and is caught between the fan and the cabin filter. Requires tools, patience and draught strips!
