Default 1998 SLK Ash Tray Sticking

My 1998 SLK230 ash tray is Sticking. The spring mechanism that pushes it out seems to be clogged, possibly with a cigarette filter, although I cannot get at it to see what the problem is. The tray moves, but only barely and I have to pull it out by hand. I removed the inner tray and found a small tab in the rear surface of the main tray body, but pushing it down does not free it up. Can someone advise me on the correct procedure to remove it? Thank you, Larry Carr - larry@lrcarr.info

I'm curious too, I've seen a few threads asking how to remove the ashtray drawer (not the whole thing with the lighter and not the removable tray) but seems like no one knows about it or just did not get any attention. I have coins that got toss over and got beneath or behind the ashtray drawer which makes it hard to open or close but have no clue on how to remove the drawer. Of course I can always wait till the next service and ask the dealer to do it but it would be nice if I can take care of it now.

THe MB dealer service rep told me the whole face plate needs to be removed to work on the tray - not a good design he remarked.

I sprayed a little WD40 into the drawer with the ash tray removed - a week later it now opens at will...
