Default Radio Swap

I have a 99 Slk 230 Kompressor and I have a stock radio in it right now...however I would like to replace the radio with an aftermarket headunit. Does anyone know where I can find a dash installation kit??? I have checked ebay and they only have ones for 01 and up!

Do you mean the two small (knive) looking tools which are used to remove the stock radio ?

I had a 2000 SLK230 (which should be the same as the 99)

You do not need a dash kit. The Bose head unit you currently have is a 1-Din (single din) unit. The 2 little slots to the left and right of the bottom of the head unit are used to eject it.

You can purchase the "keys" on ebay. search for head unit tool, or you can use a thin metal nail file. i used to use a swis army knife. and it did the trick.

In the back you will find (if i remember correctly) 2 harness plugs, and 2 fiber optic cables (if you have a 6 cd changer in the trunk) they will be orange in color.

If you upgrade, your changer will be useless, that is if you have one to begin with.

Then you also will need an antenna adapter:
Metra Electronics Corp. - 40-VW30

And you will need a harness adapter or you can just cut into the stock wires.
I think the adapter is this one:
Metra Electronics Corp. - 70-1786

If not i think you will be able to find a simple wiremap for the R170 online.

The new head unit should be a single din type, and will just fit right into the original slot where the current bose unit is.

Hope this helps...

I was actually talking about the plastic piece that goes around the new radio!! Sometimes aftermarket radios are smaller than stock and you need a piece to fill in the gap...but I guess the tools to remove it would help though huh!

I see, I got you know they are usual like a plastic frame you put behind the radio so it supports it rather it being loose in the dashboard.

Thank you and you can get them at cardomain.com, select your car, model and year and their search function will provide you with the results that are applicable on the SLK R170.

usually this plastic piece comes with the unit if it needs it. Pioneer, JVC, Alpine, and other major brands usually inlcude this with the head units as an option. But if you check the box contents FIRST and its not included, you could check online like alroumi said.

But there is a good chance that its already in the box for you. I would google the specific model online, and look for an online pdf of the manual to download. usually this is a parts list of "Whats in the box" and you will see the install there and the trim piece as well.

Lenny, I absolutely agree and I've purchased an after market Kenwood head unit for my ML a couple of years ago and it came with the frame which supports the radio so that it can be placed on the dashboard.

I just removed stupid chinese radio out of my slk (97 200k) and it seems that there is quite a mess with wires. Could someone post a link to wiring diagram where I can track down wiring by colors. Thanks for your help!
