How about Green Air Filters? These improve fuel economy, gives a slight increase in the roar (this is quite subjective, as the sound of the exhaust is in the rear and it may be as loud as you want it tobe from the cockpit) and are easily removed and replaced with OEM air filters prior to service, and thus avoid the warranty issue.

Try the green filters first. Reportedly other benefits as pointed out by Etyu. I made the mistake of going with an after market exhaust on another vehicle. Loved the look, hated the sound. I'll never make that mistake again. Personally, I like the sound of the SLK 350. The sound I'd expect from a classy car.

My 05 got real throaty sound at about 10k miles and the exhaust was stock ---- Scott was running with me on one trip and said it sounded great from behind , got to be careful of the V6 so it doesn't get that high pitch cackle --- I believe that you can do pretty much what you like to the system from the cats back without to much worries but ask Dan he would know for sure

If your interested in a nice and moderate sounding exhausts the brabus are good, I've heared them on an SLK350 and its not loud but it's deep and has a nice rumble to it.

I have the supersprint, it sounds a bit louder than stock

here's the video, check it out.

Piecha exhaust sounds louder and sportier, that's another option.
