Default R171 Boot / Trunk Size?

Can anybody advise the dimensions please?

I'm going to collect the car tomorrow and due to my other half's shoe collection (Imelda Marcos eat your heart out!) I'm trying to decide which bags / cases will fit the best. It was my intention to get the Roadster bags but seeing as we'll probably never use them again didn't see the point.

Thanks in advance.

Congratulations Paul!!

The boot/trunk space is roughly 36 in. wide, 22 in. deep and 17 in. high (with trunk separation lid disengaged). There is 4 inches additional width to each side that may be used with the side cargo net. This may hold an additional pair of shoes on each side in addition to the main boot/trunk space as long as they're not boots.

BTW, don't forget the bring the digital camera. Would like to see photos please.

I think on this forum on one of the other Benz forums this issues has already been discussed. I remember there was a post that said what the largest bag that would was.

But we can fit our 2 airplane overhead, carryon bags and a laptop computer a couple of camera bags and still have room from some coats and maps, if that helps.

Congratulations on the new arrival. Have a fun trip, enjoy, and document with photos for us mortals. You will be surprised with the amount of space the R171 trunk has.

I find the trunk size to be quiet large, if you have used the search button here you find many members travelling with ease as it fits many bags and other travel goods.

I like the Roadster bag. And you can pack lots more stuff around it.

Its big mate check out some of easty's travel pics (run a search it should pic them up).

If space is a problem you can put your wife in the boot and pack stuff in around her so she doesn't bash her head going around bends then put the rest inside the car.

I've never understood that bag design. If it was properly designed for the car it would fit the space perfectly.

As shown in your pics, it is just an oddly shaped bag that has no relation to the boot shape or size!

We only take the SLK for short break in the country with nice roads, no point in using it for UK motorway driving.

We have a Mandarina Duck case with built in suit/clothes carrier. A perfect fit for the main part, then walking boots on the little bit on one side, one side and small rucksack on the other.

That'll do us about 4 to 5 days storming along lanes in Northumberland and Cumbria (and up the fells by foot!)

If it filled the whole boot it would be terribly inconvenient. When removing the case from the boot most people don't want to take everything that's in the boot. People keep things like lamps, cleaning stuff, spare CDs etc...none of which you want to haul into a hotel room.

Heres an example to explain richard_leeds issue which I also feel is relevant...
my previous car, a nissan 350z, had a set of travel luggage made for the Z, which fit amazingly well, and was designed to take advantage of the weird shape of the trunk as well as the huge rollbar right in the middle..
see pic below:-

For the money and with our odd sized trunk, you would think the SLK would include such luggage.

I would be highly suprised if they "included" them (remember this is MB) but it would be nice if they at least offered them.
