Default Transmission Noise

Hi all, I'm looking for help with a problem. I have a 99 SLK 230 w/ 5 speed manual tranny that is making a squeaking/whining noise. Here are the details: First impression would be is that it's the water pump or power steering pump bearings, because it's the same kind of noise those components make when they are on their last legs. The noise does change with RPMs. Currently, there is no noise when the engine is started cold, but it does appear once the engine warms up. The noise exists while in gear and in neutral. But here's the kicker - the noise goes away as soon as I step on the clutch. Also, the clutch doesn't need to be depressed all the way for the noise to disappear - about an inch or so is all it takes. Can't seem to find any type of clutch fluid reservoir in the engine compartment or any way to check fluid level of the transmission. I welcome any thoughts. Thanks.

Sounds like it could be the clutch throw-out bearing.

Ditto, how many miles are on the car?

Deffo sounds on the way out to me, the gearbox is supposed to be sealed for life so you wont find any way to checking its fluid levels sorry and if the sound is present in neutral when only a few gearbox parts are moving its not likely the box itself.

Only about 40,000 miles on the car. Does the bearing really have that short a lifespan? Most of the miles are highway and not much stop 'n go and I don't ride the clutch. What's involved in changing the bearing? DIY or dealership? I'm pretty good mechanically (many brake jobs, u-joints, exhausts, spring replacements, snow plows - on trucks, not the SLK - LOL), but if it's going to involve removing the tranny, I might have to consider forking over the dough. Also, what am I risking by continuing to drive it?

On my last car (hydraulic clutch), the throw-out bearing was part and parcel with the slave cylinder, not sure how it's set up on the SLK.
