| I have recently bought a 2006 SLK200K. As I live in Dubai, the car is fitted with a "beeper" which goes off above 120 kph (this is standard on all vehicles in the Arabian Gulf). On the SLK it is very loud and very annoying!! Anyone know how to disable this "feature"? |

| You need somebody with an SDS computer to change the cars location once it thinks it's out of the Arabian Gulf the noise will stop. I don't know if a dealer would do it for you but it cant hurt to ask, does this sound come from the cluster beeper or the sound system if the dealers refuse to help you could always snip the wire to the beeper.

Yeah...i cant complain this time.. a few hours work and then lots of fun! I skied all morning at the mall of the emirates, just super! I spotted two Ferrariis and four 911. I havent seen any SLK. Obviously my sample is not represantative of the population... only one afternoon.. And yes my Taxis had the same annoying bleeping sound... I asked the taxi driver, who was also very annoyed by the sound ....and was planning to shoot the car every night after a long shift... Ciao {

So if you tell the car its in the UK then it stops you from selecting km/h on the analogue speedo and forces it onto the lower display so you don't have the option to show the temp on that small screen, tell it that it's in the US and different engine maps are used because of the more restrictive emissions rules and so on an so forth. I am sure you get the idea.

1. When I lived in Abu Dhabi several years ago, dealers were usually willing to disconnect the beeper during a service (I had a Honda and a Mazda modified in this way). It look like I will have to see if the Mercedes dealer in Dubai is willing to do this... 2. These days, lots of brands have relatively quiet warnings, and often they stop after 10-15 seconds above 120 - I recently rented a Toyota that did this. Mercedes seems to be an exception, the beeper does not stop and is LOUD!!!

So if the dealer is willing to modify this setting for me, where should I ask them to set the location for - so that: a) the beeper is off b) speeds are still in kph c) performance is not compromised Thanks.

| If they look hard enough they should be able to disable the alarm when they get the right settings page up it will probably say Arabian Gulf / Rest of World since its a setting only for the one country code if they set it to rest of world that should stop it without then actually having to change it to a different country code.

| it;s not even bad ... the beeping might be a good thing .. but it's stressing me .. when ever I'm starting to feel comfortable driving I hear .. BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP... a NEVER ending BEEP until I go below 120...the beeping is coming from the same "speaker" that is also beeping for the seatbelt warning, and if for example when you opben the door while still rolling with the car ... Mercedes refuses turning it off, since It's "illegal" and if they get caught, they'd be in trouble ... well .. to be honest .. my old hyundai getz, had a .. bell kind of sound .. but I clipped it off, since these sounds are not for any intelligent warning .. but this one .. I WANT the car to be as functional as it was meant to be .. thing is I'm german.. I'm used of driving 240 on the Autobahn .. and not be worried of anything until my car tells me to .. but :'( my car generally tells me something is wrong when NOTHING is wrong and it's so P***ing me off! (to be honest it's a to sell the Fu**ing car!) (and the greatest thing about all this is >_< my dad is driving an SL55 from 2003 imported from germany .. and it's not making a sound )what I'll now try to do is find that beeper, and cover it in cotton, and hope it wouldn't be as loud! Please Dan if you have ANY more info ... or ideas or tricks .. let me know! I'm suffering here and I'm having a horrible experiance with my New baby because of this... I own an SLK 200 2005 model ... (the one with Audio 20 (I remoded that one and put a JVC AVX900 DVD player in with a Metra Faceplate)) And Dubai-SLK200 if you have any news or know anyone here in Dubai who can turn it off .. for less than 500Dhs) I'd be Glad as hell.. (here is this guy his name is "Arif" and he's asking for 1300 Dhs...) But MB tells me that IF I turn it off, the warrenty voids... )If this doesn't work I think I'll go for a BMW of my old Hyundai for my own sake!!! (all the driving comfort is gone because of this ) |

| P.S.: it's the same beeping that you get, when you for example put your light on anf remove the key and open the door... it comes from the cluster beeper... where is it located?? |

| The cluster beeper is a part of the cluster if you remove it and carefully dismantle you should be able to snip the wire. This will also stop the roof beep, the seatbelt beep and the light beep so its not a perfect fix. You really need an independent dealer with the SDS who will disable the beep for you / go on a long trip to a country that does not require the beep and have them do it.

| Dubai is in the middle .. =P so erm .. I'd have to leave the UAE to do it which would require some sort of a 2 day drive .. anyways .. I got a temporary fix... and maybe (I hope at least) it's a good one.. (Dan could you please verify whether it's okay to keep it this way or if it's dangerous? Burns or heat etc.) 1.) remove the speedo, by simply removing the silver covers on the right and the left side of the steering wheel (bring the steering wheel to the max towards you and down to make it easier for you) ![]() ![]() ![]() 2.) Also remove the black plastic that is inbetween the 2 silver round gauges. ![]() ![]() 3.) Now take a small metal stick and (at least 15cm long) put it into the OUTER (2) holes that were created by removing the silver panels. (left side and right side) (you'll see a black ring with a white background! push against the white background) ![]() ![]() 4.) You'll notice the whole unit will move towards you, then just pull it very very carefully! 5.) Remove the plug by pushing on the tiny button on the back of it, and then move the hook towards the side. ![]() 6.) Now you have the unit. You'll notice white paper stickers, (I think they are some sort of warrenty indicator?) ![]() 7.) Remove them slowly so they don't break (be carefull the one on the right has a white coating that falls off if the sticker is bent too much). ![]() 8.) The left sticker is a little bit tricky to remove, but you only have to move it upwards a little, and with a little feeling and touch .. it would work fine. ![]() 9.) now carefully lift the little black D hooks and push the unit out of it's seating (be careful you don't take the whole speedo out of the gauges only the black plastic cover in the back.) ![]() 10.) Here we go .. the heart ... on the lower right side you'll see the little noise maker (right next to the relay that is making the sound for the indicators) ... cutting the cable is not possible, since it's soldered right on the plate... (PLUS I never wanted the sound to stop! for the other things at least! so temprarily making it quieter is my move now ^^) ![]() ![]() 11.) Take some Sticky back, cut the soft side, (I prefere Velcro since their glew is pretty strong!) (I bought it in ace!) ![]() Take the soft side (left on the picture) ![]() cut it round, and stick it on the speaker ... so that it looks a little something like this: ![]() 12.) well... put everything back together carefully .. and put the stuff back in... ![]() (I made a test drive just now .. the beeps are still hearable but not so extremely annoying anymore... they are softer since buffered by the cotton...) Dan what do you think?? any dangerous notations?? Hope this little tutorial helps! (I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED BY DIY!) -Alex I hope you are alright with the picture size.. (the quality is ugly as hell I know but still showing the idea!) |

| Hi Alex (seems weird saying that to somebody else), Shame the thing was not separate from the board like it is on the other models but oh well. I can't see anything dangerous at all so i would be happy to drive like that without worrying, the only thing i would suggest is that if anybody else try's this mod or if you need the combi out again that you disconnect the battery first to avoid the possibility of the car thinking its being stolen. Good work mate, well done. Cheers Dan

| I put the DVD player in myself as well... and I need to say ... I am surprised in how simple it is to disamle those parts... to be honest the SLK is the easiest car yet to remove stuff from .. so organized and thought through .. the japanese or koreans (like ny other car is) ... have screws and bolts everywhere... this one works with Torx screws and clips all over the place... I gotta say... well done MB... thanks for the battery advice.. will think about it next time =)... thank you for the nice words... why the "Hi Alex (seems weird saying that to somebody else)" is your SLK called Alex? best regards.. -Alex |
