Default 2006 SLK350 Sport side marker install

OK so it looks like installing side markers isn't as simple as popping them out with a flat head screwdriver and popping new ones in. It also looks like the number of screws varies depending on the year of the car.

Has anyone changed the side markers on their 2006 SLK350 Sport and can give me some advice? I don't have a lot of tools except for what's in the trunk and some Torx screwdrivers

Thanks!

Hey midget - yeah, it's a bit more than just prying 'em off. On my 350, there was only one screw on each, so it was not that bad to get them off. I did remove the front tires and the plastic fender-well covers, which made it even easier. All in all about a 30 minute job excluding the amount of time I wasted making a mount adapter for my floor jack!

I think Eddy posted some pictures on another thread - and I be damned if I can find it now!

I didn't remove the wheels just turned them all the way to one side. Also, I used something to prop open the inner wheel well lining. I also remember eddy posting a tutorial on the install. you will definitely need a torx screwdriver. The units are hinged on one side so after removing screw then peel back from one side and remove. To install do opposite. I will look for the link.

Good luck.

Hope this link helps: http://www.slkworld.com/general-modi...er-lenses.html

It was Don (-1-) who posted the photos.
Don't have to remove the frontwheels.

1. turn front tires toward opposite side
2. remove 2 silver bolts located at horizontal panel just in front of the wheel well (need to be on your tummy or back to see these)
3. remove 2 or 3 black bolts located at the front wheel well liner (at the outer edge)
4. slip out wheel liner at its outer edge and fold away, remove or untwist the bulb holder from inner black housing.
5. remove rear torx screw (T-20) holding the inner housing to the front side markers
6. release locking tab located at the inner shell/housing (next to where the torx screw is located)
7. front side markers open up as a bivalve with the hinge located at the front

You'll need a good light source, the silver and black bolts are of different size ( IIRC, 6mm and 8mm, but I'm not sure).

Also search jbanks15 post on the same, if there are 2 torx screws holding the front side markers. IIRC, the 2 "low profile and off-set" torx heads are with him and is available as a loaner to members of this forum.

Thanks for the help, guys. The passenger side was a huge pain because there wasn't much room but the drivers side didn't take me very long. I was using a small spanner with a torx bit which kept falling out of place so it took me about 1.5 hours to get it all done. With the proper tools, it could probably be done in 45 minutes or an hour.

For my 2006 SLK350 Sport, there was only one torx screw to remove to release the side marker. I removed the two bolts inside the wheel well and two bolts below the fog lamp as mentioned.

Very nice.

Just an FYI, one can buy a set of offset (right angle)Torx wrench set (similar to Allen wrench set) at AutoZone or local auto parts store for less than $15 if not less than $10.
