Post I Broke Down.... Bought a Roof Controller, Yet Another Manufacturer in USA!

Well, we'll see if I was stupid and made an impulse purchase. I bought this one, link below. I decided to do the BUY IT NOW, as the other ones have been going for $180 or up, so I figured $30 to get it earlier was okay for a total of $210 plus $15 shipping and $5 insurance.

It is cheaper then $375+ Piecha is charging, let's hope it is as good. I will most certainly disable the top up/down on lock/unlock. If it was my second car, that feature might be useful, but even then, you do come out to the car in the rain sometimes.

This one here has the better pics and video of it working...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=200026005265

I'm hoping the windows go down with the top, that is cool!

I'll let you guys know how it goes....

That sounds really cheap. Hope it's similar to the Piecha, as that works a treat. As I learnt a couple of days ago from here. the once the roof is down 3 click on the open button and the windows drop also. Good luck with the install.

I saw these being offered on ebay and wasn't sure on the quality. Do let us know how the install goes and how well it works.

You'll be fine RacerCub68.
I bought mine from the same seller, see:
http://www.slkworld.com/general-modi...-supplier.html
Although I experience some problems with my module (same as few other of the first buyers), they replaced it and the new one is working very well.
I see a small price decrease and also they increased the max speed you can lower/raise the roof from 34mph to 39mph. By the way, I would strongly recommend not to operate the roof above 30mph (unless you are driving on a very smooth road with no front wind).

x2. Be very careful operating the roof at speed. Definitely NO speed bumps on the road. The service advisor at MB warned me that the roof can get misaligned if you hit a speed bump even at low speed.

Oh, I doubt I'll ever do it over 5 MPH. Just want to be able to slowly move away from a light when it's finishing up. It's getting close to season here, and the visiting New Yorkers arn't slow on the horn.

Did you ever find out if more clicks puts the windows down?

Once it's installed, you'd wonder how you could have lived without one.

So, the installation of this module on right hand drive slk's is the same as for the other modules?

I believe the installation is very similar on RHD. It looks like the modules from different suppliers install in the same manner as the piecha modules.

You can gain more room by removing the one bolt that holds the gas pedal. The power is drawn from the wiring loom located inside the right hand dashboard.

Here's the link: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r171...ht=RHD+install

Well, I installed it...

I am sure it not only is the first, but most likely will be the LAST modification I make to my car, at least in the first 3 years of it's life, and with me performing the install. Maybe what I need is an air conditioned garage.

The unit was a tad too tall, and the serial connectors on each end make it larger. I could not get the second from the front clip on the wire harness plastic cover to go shut, no matter how hard I tried. So I have a slight bump in my carpeting that you can push down. Not very noticable, but I don't like things not finished completely.

This also may have to do with the fact that my gaggle of wires looks bigger then the ones in people's pictures. Maybe that's because I have so many options on my car.

The Lighted Door Sill was easy, came up easy and there's a connector that's easy to seperate so you can put the sill further away. I just reconnected the connector and put the sill back in as normal.

The manual is ass backwards on whether it's in MODE 1 or MODE 2 and I had it in MODE 2 a couple of times. I wish there was a dip switch to completely disable that feature. I mean, even if this was a second car for someone, putting the roof down when unlocking the car? It rains everywhere sometime!

I have found that since my smart key is in the mode where it is one click for unlock drivers, and second for passangers, it takes me 4 or 5 to put the roof down, and 5 more to put the windows down. (We need another dip switch for that, so that when we open the roof it automaticall will put down the windows if we have it set.)

I set the speed for roof allow to 20 MPH, as I think anything above that is asking for trouble. The top part of the roof goes up much higher then a CLK's does when going down, and catches wind.

It has had 2 times where I got eager to click for windows down and it stops the top with an error if you click the unlock button on the car during it's operation. Putting the key in the ignition while it is going up or down will stop it. I haven't tried pulling the key out yet.

I tested the "resume" capability of speed violation. If you go above the set speed the roof stops and red flashing LOCK ROOF occurs. However, if you slow down under that speed, it will not resume. Once you completely STOP the car then the roof resumes going down or up.

Also, another thing learned: When you first turn on the car, if you try changing mode settings or activating / deactivating, it doesn't work initially and won't work until you turn the car off, then turn it on and let it sit a moment before trying. I noticed this delay was the same as it took to get my iPod going, so maybe has something to do with initial tests, or maybe even iPod on the bus.

Yes, everyone was right, the can connector cover is a bitch to figure out. After about 15 minutes trying to "push in" on the tabs, I gave up and used an eyeglass repair tool kit's very small flat screwdriver to slide inbetween the cover and it poped the cover off without damaging anything.

For a first timer, this is, in no way, a half hour job. I think it took me an hour and a half. The extra half hour I attribute to my neighbor talking to me about his Diesel Jetta and him going 160 MPH on the tollway to Orlando. It's hard to read instructions and work carefully when your brain is screaming "BULL**** - Don't say anything!" over and over. ;-)

Thanks RacerCub68 for the review. I'm glad you got it in. It took me 3 hours to do my piecha module, because I had to modify the fuse holder part and it took me 30 minutes to remove the CANBUS cover. Thanks for the tip on using extra small screwdrives on the sides.

You are very welcome! You didn't have any problems with the plastic cover right? The peicha one looks smaller to me.

It took me a while (probably 30 minutes to figure out) to remove the CANBUS cover but managed to with small screwdrivers but scratched the plastic cover. I then shaved off the protrusions on the side tabs at the inner surface with a motor-tool to make it easier to remove in the future (although highly unlikely that I would have to go into that area again).

Update....

Now I am sure the inside button will not work. I hold it a second and it says the top is going and I hear the motors for a second, then they stop. Holding the button inside, and not letting go no longer does it either.

I will be contacting them to find out what the issue is.

Sorry to hear that. Please keep us (especially me because I have the same module) updated with what they are saying. Hope is an easy fix.

RacerCub68, Sorry to hear about your top problems. Hope all works out ok. U were Brave to try a new model off Ebay!

Although my model is different from yours, I can tell you that they are awesome!

The other day a couple of Snooty executives were talking to each other in the parking garage, (you know the type, "were better than you and we will not acknowledge your presence." type. ), I said hello with no response from them. I was about 50 feet away from my car and lowered the roof as I walked up to it. As I pulled out I got a "Nice car" from one of them. I waved and said thanks.

I use mine a couple of times a day!

Best of luck to you!

Here is the situation.....

When I disable the module by holding down the hang up button, my inside center console roof button works fine.

When I re-enable the module by holding down the hang up button again, pushing the inside center console roof button in either direction results in the top motors functioning for only about 1 second. That happens, and it stops, whether I push the button for 1 second and let go, or I hold it in the direction.

Needless to say, the feature of raising or lowering the roof at 15 MPH doesn't function when you have to pull over, turn off the car, take the key out and press it multiple times to get to top to go up. Or pull over, turn off the car, then back on then disable the module so I can use the button.

It has made using my roof less convenient, as at least before I could leave the car run with the AC working when putting the top up or down at a standstill.

If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't. It certainly has made using my top a pain in the ass, so now I just leave it disabled. I am not looking forward to taking things apart again to remove this, and somehow fix the cut in the power wire the connector did. There's not much room to work with the wire there.

If someone is thinking about doing this mod, I'd say if you had the premium package with the IR open and close, it's not worth it. If you didn't, I would try the more expensive Piecha module.
