Default Not a good day for a "do it yourselfer"

Oh man, what a day. Had some time today so decided to focus on the SLK.

First, had to send my stubby antenna to another forum member for help with replacing my stock antenna with a stubby R170 version. I tried to solder the wire mod myself and failed miserably. Only later discovered that there is a "break in" procedure for new soldering irons I was not aware of...and this probably contributed to my issues. 4 hours plus wasted. But many thanks to one of our guys for so eagerly volunteering to save me. What a great community we have!!!

Got to the house and decided to attach the Eurolights clear side markers. Remembering all the tips, I dug in. Remove the four screws, bent the wheel well liner back behind the tire turned out. Remove the OEM markers, pre-tapped the new clear markers...no worries. Screwing the single mounting screw in I heard a "crack" on the first one I installed. Damn...I barely had the screw seated and the outside of the lens cracked. It's only noticable from close up, and is probably going to be OK. But I'll have to watch it never the less.

Next, time to clean the Green Filters. Easy enough...I've done it three times before. Pulling the front engine cover off..."snap"!! I broke the front right retaining clip. SH!T. The break was clean, and the wife had some new Crazy Glue in the house. It worked!!! It seems to be holding, and you can't even tell by looking at it close that it ever broke. Let's see how it does when the temp is 122 here plus the internal engine compartment temperature.

At least my antenna is safe!! Thanks for letting me vent folks.

Sorry to hear that mate.

We all make mistakes, it could have been worse.

Sorry about the bad day Cold Shot. I'm a fairly good "do it yourselfer" also. I'm off on Wednesday and always have something to do around the house. We have a sixty foot tree on one side of the house that's blocking some of my HD DirecTV channels. I thought I'd just climb up and top out the top twenty feet. I got about one third of the way up and realized I was out of my element (the ground). I quickly came to my senses and decided to leave it to a professional. One of Clint Eastwoods lines from his movie "Magnum Force", "a man's got to know his limitations". I'm often guilty of applying this rule after the fact.

I feel you -1-. I often recall climbing around on 4" steel beams thousands of feet above the ground in Chicago, or working on my house by "bouncing" my 20' ladder down the side. It's an odd thing when age and wisdom meet your youthful memory...especially at times of perceived personal peril.

I am a DTV guy myself. One of the first 100 customers in the US. I am on dish number 5 and have been through about 20 receivers. Hopefully, the new sat launch a few months back will bring more bandwidth (less compression) to our existing HD offerings and not another 42 shopping channels. Good luck with your LOS issues. And thanks!!

Cold Shot, i know the feeling. I've had those days many times. one bad thing just leads to another and another. I have learned to just STOP. at that point where i realize Karma is not on my side.

Quit while you're ahead!

Thanks for justifying my time tonight with a nice bottle of cabernet. I just stopped.

Here's a link to my prior post on breaking the clips (yep, I broke two!) on the front decorative piece of the air filter box: http://www.slkworld.com/amgs/4227-bo...oke-clips.html

On the clear side marker: perhaps it's a defective material from the maker, you may be able to exchange/return the defective part to the seller. On mine I did shorten the screw by perhaps 1/8" as it would push the aluminum foil that I use to cover the holes.

LOL, honestly mate it's not that bad, only some minor damage.

I messed up while cutting a wire tie a month or so back and cut part way into the wiring harness, took me over a day to fix it using the MB method and then test it all.

Unless it's a big big mistake (forget to add engine oil before starting engine or something) then the way it normally work's is we have to carry out the repair on our own dime and don't charge the customer for the original job (part's only).

So a 1 second slip cost me over $2k USD

Sounds like it was a fun day.

Life goes on. If it makes you feel any better, I'm one of many that have broken clips on the airbox. It still works just fine though.

It all depends on the soldering iron/gun that you are using as well... but some days, it doesn't pay to get out of bed.
Glad you things sorted out finally!
