Default SLK 280 Tire Size Option

I'd like a more agressive look and better grip but they way things are at the moment I don't think I want to go to the expense of buying a new set of 17" wheels (I'd only consider OEM wheels as Titanium finish matches my pewter car color) to replace the 16" I now have. Does it make any sense to consider upping the 16" fronts from 205X55 to 225X50?and the rears from 225X50 to 245X45? I'm thinking Continential sport contact to replace the Primacy's. I also think it will keep the 280 unique look which there are fewer of than the 350s out there. Is this a stupid idea? Will the handling be worse?

When I got my 280, I was sure I would get 18" wheels as soon as the first set of tires need replacement. Now I'm not so sure anymore. I'd also have to lower the car to really improve the looks, but the thing is, as of now I still don't really feel like my car's looks need any improving. The only time I might feel that way is when it is parked right next to another SLK, but then I look inside, see it's an automatic and feel a lot better about mine.

The other reason this could make sense is the ride. Sometimes I think my SLK's ride could be a little firmer, but then I hear other cars scratch their front on driveways that mine is clearing without any problems and I think to myself, hey, my car's ride, wheel size and suspension are just fine. If I were to take it to the track, I'd see things differently, but then I'd probably also want better brakes and other upgrades and yes, a more powerful engine too. All in all, I find that for driving in regular traffic and the occasional spirited weekend drive through the twisties, my car is just fine the way it is (went up Mount Hamilton last weekend at an average of 40mph. SF Bay Area folks will know I wasn't exactly cruising).

As far as your plans to stick with the 16" but to change the dimensions - I have to say I don't quite see the point. With this, the gaps between the tires and the arches would not shrink (actually, they'd increase by a little bit). I don't think I would consider this as an improvement for the looks.

I say, keep the tires you have until it's time for new wheels, if you choose to change. I like the style of the factory SLK 280 wheels (five spoke), I just don't like the size (16").

Going from 16"s to 17"s isn't worth it, imo, you can't really tell the difference, at least go with 18"s, so you will not regret it shortly after your purchase if you reconsider bigger wheels again.

I wouldn't do it, it will not be much of an improvement, yes, wider tires will feel grippier (sp?), tighter, but unless you take your car to the track, it doesn't really matter. No to Continental Sports Contact, there are much better tires for the money. It provides decent grip at the limit but mine melted at the track, apparently it's normal according to track junkies.

thanks everyone. Sounds like a waste of money unless going to larger wheels. I guess I'll stay put for now. I probably would have to lower it to look right with a larger wheel and matching smaller sidewall tire, I do wonder if there is a more agressive 16" tire other than the Primacys.
