R171 Mk 2 antenna - Page 2

OK In this first picture, point 1 is where the aerial unscrews leaving the other short base extension which seems to be fixed to the base at point 2. Point 3 appears to be the original R171 base. The thread on the aerial base itself is male, and inside point 1, and it appears to be about 5, maybe, 6mm.

Looks like if segment 2 can the removed, then the R170 ant might fit unto segment 1. However, this is all a guess/speculatiion.

Probably the 3 is the same (compared to previous one). Eddy should be right.
The 1 is only 'cosmetic', and hide (?) the metal antenna installed on 2. If i'm right, some very interesting mods may be made on 2.

If you mean the one on the boot/trunk coming as standard then no, the one you see is part of what is called the "Sports Package" option in the UK.

I wouldnt know exactly. I'm not convinced that the rear one does an awfull lot either other than add a modicum of visual appeal but I will stand to be corrected by those in the know?. Now, combined with the full AMG bodystying kit then that might be a different matter.

Yes, it was already sold though but left on show room display for potential other buyers. Apparently, the actual handover is / was embargoed until the official launch day / date so, the customer had paid but couldnt collect

however, last night i saw a black facelifted 280 on the road with regular plates and all. it looked just amazing, and i drove behind (and all around) it for abt 3-4 miles upto the city center.

for the record, it was driven by a hotter than hot mid-30's blonde milf, with kid strapped at passenger seat. even my wife was impressed (with the milf, not the car).

Portzy, I've just been looking at the UK pricing guide for the facelifted SLK and it states that if you have DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) fitted then the antennae will be longer.

I wonder if the SLK in your photo had DAB fitted, if so, then the maybe section 2 could be an additional part for receiving DAB?

Hello Ryan.

They (MB Bradford) have a couple of facelift SLK's in their showroom now and the aerials are the same on both of them. One car has the poupular options on it and the other, in particular, has the Sports Pack. Knowing the dealer like I do I doubt they would have specced DAB radio plus both cars also had the new variant of Audio 20 and I cannot recollect seeing anything specific to DAB on those units.
