| I've been driving around for over a year with a stone chip crack on my windscreen just above the steering wheel. For an extra AUD$44 I have an insurance policy this year that waive the excess and allows one windscreen repair. my question is, is there anything special about where I need to get this done and is there anything special with the glass/tinting/rain sensor/rear vision mirror etc etc |

| Yeah you will need Mercedes to do it for you with OEM glass.

| If you get it changed, check around the rear edge of the hood to make sure they didn't scratch the paint when moving the wiper blades out of the way... |

| I really hate that. Couldn't there have been a better way to set-up the wipers so that they didn't scratch the back edge of the hood!! I look at that scratch every day .. as a reminder of how not to lift the wiper blade. |

| Anyone have a photo of the damage caused, and advice on lifting the wiper blades? When you say hood, do you mean bonnet (UK)? |

| In fairness to Mercedes i have seen warnings about the wipers contacting the hood (bonnet) in the cars owners manuals but not 100% if its in the SLK's. You can also see the wipers sit below the hood line but its not as pronounced as on some of the other models. Basically if you try and lift the wiper arm out away from the windscreen when its in the park position it will make contact with the hood and scratch it. To change the blades or to clean them if you choose to do that you need to switch the wipers on until they are almost in the vertical position and then switch the ignition off to freeze them, you can now pull them away from the screen without causing any damage. Easy when you know how

| Thanks for that. On my Peugeot 407 there is a service setting for the windscreen wipers, wherby you turn off the ignition and then press the wiper stalk for a single wipe, then they automatcally move to the vertical position. Shame Mercedes can't simply update the vehicles software with fixes like this. |

But that being said if removing the key and setting the wipers to OFF makes you feel more comfortable that they wont move then it sounds like a plan to me.

| damn. I think you guys just solved the mystery of where that almost 1cm scratch on my hood came from. I see it now and then when I get into the car. It's really annoying. I don't ever remember lifting the wipers myself. Wonder where the heck it came from. |

!The windshield wipers must be in a vertical position before folding them away from the windshield. They could otherwise damage the hood. Never open the hood when the wiper arms are folded forward. Make sure the hood is fully closed. Switch on the ignition ( page 37). Turn combination switch to wiper setting II ( page 56). With wiper arms in vertical position, switch off the ignition ( page 37).

| Dan, I have a question about the "rain sensing" part. Im looking at a SLK55 the dealer is replacing the windshield because of a stone chip, he said it was a special rain sensing windshield and it was a special order thing. is there such a thing as rain sensing glass? I thought the rain sensing was a sensor somewhere on the vehicle to automate wipers. Is it really a special windshield for the SLK55? -Jason |
