Default Green Filters (old vs new)

There's been a lot of discussion about Green Filters in regards to their benefit, performance, and potential problems. I've been very happy with the improved power, response, and sound.

Recently, I was urged to check my filters and look for any unexpected issues. Well, I opened my airbox and to my surprise, there was a problem. My filters, over 1 year old, were breaking down and doing a questionable job in filtering out the bad stuff. The rubber surround was coming apart and causing the filter to fall out of place. In fact, when I removed the filters, I had to scrape off melted rubber material from the airbox. I cleaned them out, (as I do so every 6 months) and contacted Green Filters for support. They were very courteous and shipped out a new set within a week. They also included a cleaning filter. As mentioned before on this forum, there was a problem with the manufacturing of the old filters. The 'new' ones are made of a harder rubber and are slightly larger. Actually, the new model number is #2247 and the packaging states "C320 & C500." Are they new or made for another vehicle? Whatever the case, it fits just fine... actually a bit snug. I'll continue to check on them periodically.
If you have purchased Green Filters a while ago, I would take 15 minutes and check yours too.

Old starting to seperate

New vs Old

Old in airbox

New in airbox

A picture is worth a thousand words - that side by side old vs.new is a great comparator. I now know I definitely have the new style with the much shorter "skirt" (for lack of a better term). Thanks!

This thread is quite a coincidence. A year ago I purchased sport air filters from piecha. SLKworld was not selling green filters at that time. Everything was ok and i inspected them occasionally. This past Friday my check engine light came on. Take it to dealer and I am looking throught the maintenance door when my service writer and 2 techs are standing by my car discussing something. The service writer comes over and i asked if there is an issue with the cel. he says come and see. They have the sport air filter out and one had disintegrated into my maf and the pieces were sitting on the top of it. Of course, since i had installed it myself, i basically had an out of warranty experience here and they replaced the air filters with mb parts and cleaned the maf and it cost me$250 including labor. so take dsb's advice and check out your air filter whether it is green or brand x

That sucks. Sorry to hear but $250 is a whole lot better than a stone making it's way through.

DSB,

thanks from my side for this important advice.

I am quite sure that I have installed the flat ones purchased in March the this year. And they didn't have the grooves which are shown in photo #2. On the boxes were written S430 & S500. But the invoice says p/n 2477. The filters were shipped directly from Mt. Braddock, PA.

@dsb: Can recall the old p/n?
Only in terms of probability.
I am going to open the air box next weekend.

If you're asking whether I can recall the old part number, sadly I cannot. I wish I still kept the box.

Interesting that you have a different model number. If it's not the 'old' unit pictured here, then maybe you have another part? Maybe there is a different filter for the SLK350, yet my belief was they were the same filter. Hopefully a 350 owner will chime in with more information.

In the end, I'm glad to hear you'll check the airbox. It's a little inconvenient but could potentially save your engine.

Let us know your results.

Default This IS a coincidence!

I just finished inspecting and cleaning my Green filters this morning. I've got the new style flat ones and they are fine. Then I logged on to review/search for oil change info and found this thread. This is a great forum isn't it!!

The new filters look shallower...do the new filters flow the same amount of air as the old ones?

Good question. I thought the same but where would one look for the answer?

x2, mine is new too, shorter skirt. haven't had a problem since I'd checked a month ago.

I checked mine. I had the old style installed and the new style on reserve. With the old style the black rubber seal may have shrunk slightly but no tear. I might swap it out for the new style this weekend.
