Mesh vs Plexiglass wind deflector

I'm looking at getting the wind deflector. I'm having trouble making up my mind on which one to get and would like to hear your experiences on what you have and why you purchased it. Do the mesh and plexiglass perform the same as far as deflecting the wind and noise? Are there visibility issues with the mesh? Please share with me your thoughts on this. Thanks...G

The other thread that Tim has provided the link to says it all, across its 4 pages of discussion.

However, in answer to your questions...
Yes, they both deflect wind and noise about the same.
Yes, the mesh has visibility problems - I found I couldn't just leave permanently in place, as visibility with the mesh version is so poor, especially at night.
I bought the WindRestrictor version, as I have leather covered roll over bars, which are not compatible with the OEM plexiglass wind deflector (allegedly - although I know people that still have that fitted anyway).

Go plexiglass... whether OEM or WindRestrictor... and you'll be glad you did!

Note: @Windrestrictor offer forum members a 5% discount (I think the code to use is "Paul5".

In my opinion if you get the mesh you'll be disappointed and wish you'd got the plexiglass one.

I'd not used my mesh one for 2 years and put it back on the other week. Within 2 miles I wish I hadn't as I couldn't see a thing behind me.

I finally gave up and ordered one from Germany on ebay earlier this week. It wasn't cheap

Just looked on eBay and wow you're right they are costly for what it is. Did you buy from Mr_gmbh? About £119?

I must admit I feel blind at night with the mesh fitted and it's so right to fit I don't consider removing it.

The Perspex version does look much better and I'd pay if it doesn't mean too much risk of making a mess if all goes wrong. Seen them sold on eBay for £200+ also, but that's ridiculous!

The mesh one was in the car when I got it.

The plexiglass I got from hammer-store_de
I'd been looking for a second hand one for months. One did appear on here but was gone in minutes.

At £396.36 including delivery I almost cried, but you can wait and wait, and eventually if you want something that much you just have to bite the bullet.

I want some original bonnet fins too, but I don't have another arm to bite off so will probably get some cheaper ones.

I was planning on upgrading to a 55, but if I did I'd have to look out the window at it every weekend as I couldn't afford to go anywhere. I decided to stick with the 280 and have a social life. When I do eventually upgrade I should be able to get a fairly decent return on these extra bits and peaces.

I'm just not going to bow down and be charged for a piece of plexi-glass. The material is so cheap and so easy to cut and shape, the cost is totally unjustified. Besides, its a convertible, wind is still going to blow all around the cockpit area no matter what windscreen you have. It really is more of a cosmetic thing than a functional thing especially if you want to pay extra for a laser imprint (should be included for the price they charge). Just an honest opinion.

There certainly are some ugly OEM versions out there. I want to replace the head unit first so I'm suffering the mesh for this summer at least; although I'm attached to my arms I do have a pair of used kidneys I'm sure one might fetch a few quid

There's a lot more to the original version which looks far more polished in its design but at close to £400 you can't help but feel like you're having your leg lifted. I do agree though that sometimes you just have to dig deep and tell yourself it's only money, and you can't take it with you

I really like how yours attaches to the hoops. Would you mind directing me to where you bought yours? Apologies if the details are in the thread somewhere.

Love your black paint by the way. You must have spent hours waxing it.

This is the cheapest I found.

Original Mercedes Benz Wind deflector transparent 3-piece SLK 171 B67812227 | eBay

Ordered 17th May. Delivered 19th May.

The website says delivery in 2 or more weeks, but it came a lot quicker as you can see.
It was brand new in the Mercedes box. I've not fitted it yet, will do it later today or tomorrow

I hear you Robrowdy, except for the highlighted part. I find it a lot better than the mesh wind stopper.
The wind turbulence is a lot less in the cabin and for rear visibility, there is no comparison, especially at night.
Just my honest opinion

Had mesh on the 230 and have oem plexi on the 55.
I'd go for plexi every time.
Having to check both wing mirrors when one quick glance in the rear view would do was eventually irritating.
If we'd kept the 230 it was getting the mesh removed for a plexi.

Prices are a shocker though.

Personally, I prefer the mesh wind protector. I only use a deflector occasionally (when the air is cold) and the mesh deflector goes on and comes off easily and quickly. It also folds up and fits in the CD storage box in the console.

I used it this weekend, briefly, because the air was quite chilly along the Mendocino coast and I wanted to put the top down for a drive along Hwy 1. With the mesh in place, the interior stays comfortably warm and draft free for a nice ride when the air is cold. I don't have any problems seeing with it in place when the top is down, and I take it off when I put the top up.
