Default My new toy

Hey guys, I just bought the Pioneer Avic-D3. I'm planning to have one of my more technically inclined friends install the deck. However, can anyone tell me what accessories I will need in order to properly install it into my car? I currently have the factory XM setup, 6 disc changer and I will eventually purchase the pioneer bluetooth and ipod adapter. Thank you all in advance for any help you can provide.

It's not going to be a simple install, but it's been done before. Do a search on this and the other MB forums for all the information available. The Pioneer AVIC-D3 is a great choice. It's requires separate Pioneer modules for either XM or Sirius satellite radio, Bluetooth, and iPod for complete system integration. My recommendation is decide which add-ons you want and complete them during the initial install. Gather all the information and necessary parts before you begin. Here's one link, but check for others. Good luck and provide feedback on your installation.

Congratulations SLKChick. Do provide pictures of the process and the final version. I agree with -1-, get the bluetooth and iPod integration so it all can be done in one installation process.

Thank you all for all your replies and comments. I still had a question though, so even though I already have XM radio built into my car already. I will still need to get the pioneer XM radio module? I will definitely post some pictures of the installs once it gets completed.

Yup, I would assume there's no way to integrate the factory Sirius with the Pioneer AVIC-D3. The Pioneer XM and I assume Sirius satellite module is around $100 and is a simple cable connect to the head unit. Same for the Bluetooth and iPod modules.

Haha, sorry, I only know what I see and the avic-d3 said XM?? But I actually want to integrate the avic-d3 with my sirius radio, will I still need to get an adapter?

Side note: does anyone have any spare parts lying around in their garage??

SLKChick,

I found out with a $300 CD changer on my 1994 S500 that cost $1,200, at that time Mercedes-Benz used Alpine components, but changed the plugs on the end so you couldn't substitue the manufacturers cheaper one. If the Sirius was made by a regular manufacturer, I'm sure Mercedes-Benz changed the interface so you couldn't use it without their system.

Besides Sirius SUCKS the big one. Horrible, over-compressed quality. Go with iPod and you'll always hear what you like!

I've put off installing the D3 in my car because of the time issue. So instead in the mean time I decided to upgrade my projectors with HIDs that will both make my baby cuter and safer. Now keep in mind that I have no technical knowledge and two left hands. So I had to get it installed by Matt from Umnitza.com. I've always brought all my car upgrades over to him and this is no different. I personally thought it looks amazing and the color cute off is so my color(light purple). The light output is thanks to a 50W 8000k setup. Let me know what you guys think
BTW if anyone around the San Francisco bay area needs someone to install HIDs or any type of I.C.E on their cars PM me and I'll send over the vendor's info. Matt is a great guy and a great installer.

Yea, money well spent. Great improvement over the halogen bulbs. If you haven't already, change the parking light bulbs to something like the PIAA super white, extreme white, bulbs for something that will match you new HIDs.

The HID's look very nice.

I echo Don's suggestion to change the parking lamps to the PIAA wedge 5W lamps. I'd recommend the PIAA Super Plasma GTX as it has the highest color temp at 5000K (not quite the 8000K of your headlamps) with a slight purplish hue when lit. Check out TTstuff.com (for better price). The PIAA part no. is 19283 for the Super Plasma GTX.

Part no. 19172 for Xtreme White at 4150K color temp.
Par no. 19168 for Super White with a color temp. of 3800K.

All would be an improvement over the OEM W5W parking lamp. No need for resistors as the PIAA lamps are incandescent with a blue tint on the glass.

Just had those parking bulbs installed and they match perfectly. Now I'm going to have to wait for a week before I can get my LED turn signal(front/rear), and LED sidemarkers. BTW, does anyone know where I can get the clear bumper corners? I know there is stealthauto.com but I rather not deal with them again because it took 3 weeks to get my order.

I got the clear sidemarkers from freestylemotorsports.com. Link: http://www.freestylemotorsports.com/...bf8934fb67170f

Remember to tap the rear hole of the clear side markers (i.e. thread the hole with the OEM screws and then remove the screws before installation) ahead of time, this will make installation easier.

I have the PIAA PlasmaIon lamps (W5W type), part no. 19173, from TTstuff.com (less expensive). I like the yellow over the amber lights.

The LED turn signal lamps and sidemarker lamps will require resistors or you'll get the "light bulb out" warning on the cluster display. Moreover, LED lamps tend to fail easily for some reason (as per Noregret4life's experience), which is why I use aftermarket incandescent light bulbs/lamps instead.

Nice Lights!

I have a pioneer Avic D2 In my Yukon. (which i dont think i posted any pics off). It came from another vehicle we had it in, and even tho its a double din, we made it fit and look nice in the din 1/2. My big peice of advice for the unit.

Ground the parking brake wire, instead of hooking it up to the parking brake. Yes this will allow you to watch video if u have a dvd or aux player installed, but thats not why i say that, (i mean cmon u have a two seater you shouldnt be watchin movies while driving!). But instead it allows to change your destination on the fly, otherwise you have to pull over, put the parking brake in, and chane the destination on the Nav. Which is a pain in the arse lemme tell you.

My two cents.

And welcome

Thank you for your kind advice, but the ability to watch DVDs aren't so much just for myself, but for my twin sister when we go long distance shopping. So being able to change my destination on the fly and watching DVDs is something I'm going to want. Does anyone know where I can get the bezel and mounting bracket for the unit?

Btw etyu, thank you for your advice regarding the LED resistors. I understand you need to install resistors in order to prevent the bulb out issue. Luckily I will be getting it from Matt at Umnitza.com because they are a great vendor and the bulbs come along with resistors already. Question is, what bulb application do I need for my front and rear turn signals? http://www.umnitza.com/product_info....roducts_id=292

Last question, how do I upload or post my siggy? Everyone has a picture of their cars and I want to show off my very bone stock slk350.

I checked the Umnitza.com site. The LED bulbs come with "equalizer" (these are the resistors, as the equalizers are to be installed at a flat metal area and they become hot) and they come as a kit with the needed wire taps.

The front turn indicator lamps are of the 3457 type, the rear turn signal lamps are of the 1156 type.

To post pix in your signature. Make sure you have the pix of choice in your computer (e.g. in My Pictures folder). The size is limited to 100KB or 700x300.

Go to User CP at top row menu, click on Edit Signature at the left hand column. Within the Edit Signature window, go towards the bottom, there's a section called Signature Picture, within this section, click browse and choose the designated photo that you want to upload from your computer, click Insert Signature Picture, click Save Signature.

Hope the above helps.

Ok, thanks I'll try to upload a good picture. Do you happen to know where I can get the bezel and mounting bracket for my double-din?

Hi, try Metra online. It's model 99-8713. Mounting bezel for either single DIN or double DIN.

http://www.metraonline.com/vehicleguide.aspx

Here's the .pdf file for the 99-8713 with mounting information.

http://documents.victorytechnologies...ct/99-8713.pdf

Nice signature pic.

Nice Signature Picture SLKChick. I've only seen one white R171 in my area around Lake Forest/El Toro. Are you near this area? Are you considering the SmartTop roof module? Euroclear side markers look real well on a white car.
