Question Rock the Nav-bah...

Does anyone know if you can replace the background screens in COMMAND?

For example, in the AUX one I want to change it to have an iPod fadded in.

I wish, but really doubt it. MB seem to put more money developing ways to stop it being hacked than they do improving the system.

It used to be quite popular on the old COMAND units i think the new ones make it impossible

I went to lunch with a friend and he just installed a unit in his suv. not sure of the brand, maybe fujitsu. It has a internal HD for navigation and music, plays dvd's and cd's. has a rear camera for paking and sat radio. The interface is completely custmisable and very very advanced. It made my command look like it required coal shoveling into the back to keep it running. I started to wish i got a model with no command and installed a custom 3rd part unit.

That sounds real impressive and right up NG4L's street.

I think MB will have to shape up quite soon because while we have some cool things like the infa-red headlamps and distronic we lag behind in many other areas i guess it stems back from when your average Benz driver was 70 and thought that the car giving him directions was some sort of voodoo thing so it did not matter how good the maps where or what the UI looked like but thats different now and while some of the people at Merc i talk to understand that some of the important ones don't.

It is true that Mercedes is lagging when compared to other German manufacturers as far as recretional electronics (music, gps etc) are concerned. Their problem is that they do not make any effort to change the entertainment package of the car as time goes by and the expectations of the driver change. I would prefer a decently engineered car to one with the flavour of the month electronics.

The best cost effective method for our slks' seems to be the standard audio 20 without the cd player (so you do not have any MOST connections as far as the head unit is concerned) and then just buy a decent aftermarket system.

With the asking price of the command system (4000 Euros in my country, about 2700 of her majesty's finest pounds ) you can get a very good aftermarket navigation / multimedia system with the newest electronics.

I know there is still some resistance from the more conservative part of the Mercedes customer pool to keep everything in the car
in factory spec, but times as well as customers' expectations change.

It is true the Lexus Nav is better then Mercedes, excepting 2 conditions. 1. The vehicle is in motion. 2. You get slaped in the face every time you start your car.

The Nav is better in that it takes you to the direct address (MB does in Germany, not in USA), you can look up business name and if finds the nearest. Also you can tell it the phone number and it will find the address for it, or when you put an address in it gives the option to call them.

However, when the car reaches the speed of 2 MPH, every programming function is greyed out and shut off. The passanger can NOT program it unless the car is fully stopped. This also includes the big numbers for the bluetooth phone, intead of pressing the big 1, you fumble for your handset. Doesn't make much safety sense does any of this?

Also, I live in Florida. People kill 2 cops a year hitting them on the highway. Those cars have flashing lights. Imagine if we're sitting in a silver non-descript LS430 on the side. Dead meat!

THe other thing is the stupid lawyer message. The display will ONLY show the rear view camera, it won't let you do anything with radio, climate control or NAV until you press the I AGREE button on the "you're stupid" warning message.

I have found from the Lexus Forums, there's no way to get rid of the button. However snipping a speed reporting wire turns off the kabosh. It's a leased car, so I don't know if I am going to do that or not.

One other thing about the Benz Nav that my Toyota Sienna Nav lacks is that "shrinking bar" that indicates remaining distance. I like that. When you are in traffic and have a lot of things to pay attention to, being able to tell at a glance how fast you are closing or your next turn is nice.

And it is particularly nice to have it displayed in the MFD. It is kind of amazing how much easier it is to just glance down and read the MFD versus looking to the side and trying to find the information of interest and refocus on it. And when looking at the main display, it is much harder to see what is coming up in front of you from the corner of your eye than when you are looking down at the MFD.

(just returned from a long trip in the van so I was paying attention to stuff like that)
