how to install a Pioneer 8000nex into the car

I have an 2005 slk350 with comand HK logic 7 system. I am currently researching how to install a Pioneer 8000nex into the car. My goal is to retain the stock speakers, amp and just replace the head unit therefore giving me all the updated features as BT, reverse camera, mirror link etc. I have decided through my research that the only device that can I have been able to find is NAV-TV MOST-HUR OPTI which will work ( i haven't installed it yet but I have it's not cheap, but cheaper than replacing the amp & re-wiring the speakers) The only issue I have encountered so far is how to receive signals from the canbus which will give the unit reverse, illumination, vehicle direction, parking brake and/or bypass for the NAV and Backup camera to work properly.

Most audio installers will be able to supply a CAN breakout box for a particular headunit, or just a generic one to give you the signals you need.
Most plug directly into the head unit with a manufacturer specific pig tail for things like steering wheel controls, and provide wired outputs for reverse, speed sense, parking brake, lights etc etc

Like this

the pigtail

The adapters - universal and car specific

Thank you for the replies, I have not been able to do any work on replacing the Head Unit. I have been working on intake manifold runner flap repair to the vehicle. Now that manifold repair is complete I can devote some time to an aftermarket Head Unit swap. So far I have managed to get the following list of parts to complete this swap. Metra dash kit 99-8713, Merta steering wheel control adapter ASWC-1, Antenna adapter 40-EU10 and Canbus interface XSVI-9005-NAV. which the Metra company states will work in this vehicle. The question is..... has anyone been successful using theses parts in completing the retrofit without issues? any assistance or info would be very helpful.

I contacted Connects2 replied and unfortunately they indicated that they do not make a interface that works properly with the MB comand system.

I had my install by Best Buy with the exact items you mention. My AVIC 8000NEX works without any issues. I would suggest you find a reputable place to install it the right way. Good luck.

The attached photos are the connectors I have at the Head Unit. I have not found the CANBUS connector under the foot well where I can tap into the speed, reverse, can hi & can lo does anyone have a picture or a diagram of it at the foot well? I assume I can get the constant + at the fuse box (drivers side USA cars) ignition +, ground & illumination at the Cigarette Lighter.

I have tried all the installers in my location they will not do it. Its a small town, in fact one of the installers said he never knew MB made a car like a SLK. When I told him the audio is connect through fiber optics he said why would they do something like that.......therefore it is not surprising they are hesitant to work on the car. I am just gonna have to do it myself.

Woowwww, sounds like it's going to be a nice setup. I'm subscribing just to see how it plays out. I have to ask, do you have Smart Top installed on your car?

Thank you riceball: APPRECIATE YOUR INPUT HELPS A LOT

I will post the install with photo's & what ever additional info I can provide. I have not been able to find a good comand go-by that really documents how to do this retrofit. I have not been able to find any radio harnesses for this comand system so I will have to tap each wire connection. I have been in contact with Metra who indicates there are none for the MB comand. There are adapters available on line for the Audio 20 and Bose systems but not comand.

Parts: 1 NAV-TV MOST-HUR OPTI
2 Pioneer 8000NEX
(Mic wired to upper left sun visor, GPS antenna under front speaker grill, BU cam ( I may change the camera but this is one I had on hand) through trunk tapped rear Sam for ignition power to wireless transmitter camera connected to transmitter).
3 Axxess ASWC-1 (steering wheel interface)
4 Axxess XSVI-9005-NAV (CANbus interface)
5 40-EU10 Antenna adapter (SLK need to get additional extension of about 18 inches to run from the amp to the HU)
6 Backup camera
7 Wireless camera 2.4G Wireless Color Video Transmitter and Receiver ( I did not want to run a wire through the car to the HU)

Mazz are you close to a major city that can do the installation for you? If you cannot figure how to install the stereo you may need to venture to a place that can get the job done. Good Luck!

I to wanted to replace my Harmon Kardon NGT1 comand with a different head unit, however, after seeing how complicated it was, I decided to let a professional do the installation instead. I was told by the professional that I would need the following adapter in order to retain the Harmon Kardon amplification:

that's crazy expensive!!

might as well go with a different and head unit and splice all the speaker wires

OR

you can get a fiber optic head unit for $600 on ebay. direct plug in and you can keep the fiber optic amps

removing the radio and other items took 20 minutes.

@rice4balls: Yea it is expensive, however, splicing wiring is not an option for me as I not technically inclined to preform such a task. Having a professional doing it will cost almost as much as I would need to add an amplifier to retain the same sound quality. The only fiber optic head unit I found which is compatible is the Dynavin DVN-MBSLK which costs roughly 1100 euros (800 euros for the head unit, 170 euros for the N6-Most adapter, 80 euros for the MOST wiring adapter). And this is without installation and rear camera which I really need, so adding that would probably add another 200 euros to the bill making the total 1300. Yes it is 500 euros cheaper, but I really like the kenwood system over the Dynavin.

DYNAVIN DVN-MBSLK Autoradio Navigation DVD Naviceiver N6 für Mercedes SLK R171 | eBay

MOST Adapter für Soundsystem Mercedes,Porsche oder BMW | Dynavin | OEM Radios | Autoradios | Toms Car Hifi

DYNAVIN DVN-CABE 5M Kabel für DVN-MBE Autoradio Mercedes E Klasse mit Most | eBay

So is there another head unit with MOST or is this the only one? My appointment for the installation is on the 30th of May, enough time for a change of heart. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all for your help and responses: DOG the interface connects I have at the my amp under the footwell does not look anything as the ones in that interface that interface harness looks more like the audio2 setup to me.

What information that I have been able to compile is that the comand NGT1 HU is different than the NGT2.5. The 2.5 uses a different amplifier under the floorboard gateway and that needs to be replace as well along with the HU. It is not a simple swap plug & play. It has to do with the mechanism they used with the NGT1 head. For example: there is no antenna connection at the radio head the antenna is plugged into the amp. It looks to me from looking at the diagrams on the comand head there are no speaker, antenna, power supply connections as on the audio 2 units. Which is why when upgrading to the 2.5 HU the upgrade must be done at the gateway as well which becomes very expensive. ( I may have it wrong but this is how it looks to me).

In the photos of my head unit connections seems to correspond to the Comand connections that Riceball attached.
Therefore with the installation of the NAV-TV MOST-HUR OPTI interface, all that is needed is to connect the fiber optics connection which will connect the stock amp through the OPT1 to the aftermarket HU. That’s all the OPT1 does. All other connections as CANbus Hi/Lo, steering wheel, radio antenna, speed, reverse & BU cam signals must be connected separately because those signals are through the amp not head unit. The problem is that as far as I have been able to discover that no one makes a wire harness that corresponds to the comand amp connections under the footwell to tap into the other signals for an aftermarket HU to work. I may be making it more difficult than what it is but this is how it looks to me.

I just want to document the entire process so if another person is in a similar situation and wants to DIY there is a comprehensive GO-BY to complete the retrofit without the need to go to a professional installer which will cost hundreds more.

Steering Wheel Controls

I'll be interested to hear how your hookup goes with your unit. I have a Pioneer AVH-X8500BHS installed but we never could get the steering wheel controls work properly. I'll be interested in hearing how your installation goes. Be sure to post some specifics about the install.
