I suspect you are right (no light left on...) - I'd bet money that whatever you did do "confused" some bit of one of the roof controllers, and it kept something "on" until the battery ran down. When you jumped it, and cycled the top, this probably reset whatever was "confused". I'd think a 5amp load would probably put a hurting on any battery over 12 hours or so! | |

| Ok, finally had success with the install today. The add-a-circuit made it 20 times easier -- they should just include one in each kit and make it the standard way to power the device. What fuse position did everyone use? I used #22 which was for alot of the accessory lights and non-essential things. And the trick with the getting the CANBUS cover off is to open it towards yourself (or pull off the front), not "up" as the instructions say. That makes it pop right off very easily. Also, my SLK already has a daytime running lights option in the console settings -- how is this different from the DRL lights the smarttop offers? But now everything works as it should. One remaining issue: When I turn the car off and lock the doors, the small, dim light in the driver's side foot well doesn't seem to shut itself off until I lock the doors. I waited a few minutes, and it didn't turn off. So I suspect that if I don't lock the car, that light will stay on indefinitely and drain the battery. How long is that little light supposed to stay on? |

| Thanks to everyone on this thread. I just got my SmartTOP in the mail... WITHOUT any instructions. I'm about to download the instructions - but I'm so glad I read this thread before getting started. I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks again everyone!

| I don't have the feature were you can operate the top with the remote. If I install the smartop would I be able to use any of its features or would it be a waste of money |

| SmartTop will work fine without the IR functions - it actually "replaces" what you can do with the IR portion of the remote in addition to more functionality. |

| As UK-C200 stated it will work. My prior 2006 280 did not have the SmartKey roof operation option (i.e., no infrared or IR sensor on the door handles), SmartTop worked fine. SmartTop mainly uses RF (radiofrequency) received by the antenna, transmitted to the module (which when it receives the correct 3 click or 2 click instruction from the remote key), will in turn send the instructions to operate the roof and windows (with 3 clicks) or windows only (2 clicks) in addition to locking or unlocking the car doors as the case may be.

| It was a service run by SLKWorld - unfortunately, no longer in business. If you are looking for a SmartTop, take a look at mods4cars site at http://www.wilhelmy-it.com/ |

| Finally had a chance to get some photos on removing the CANBUS cover this am. I thought I'd post it here as it is related to installing the SmartTop, and it's already stickied. This tip was from a German website. 1. Insert a flat wooden stick to each side (narrow) of the CANBUS cover. German site used wooden matchsticks. I used the wooden coffee stirrers from coffee shop. Measure and cut/trim the wooden insert to the same length as the whole CANBUS assembly (see photo 1 below). Do the cutting away from the assembly to avoid cutting any wires and reinsert the flat wooden stick. Secure to lower end of the assembly w/masking tape (see photo 2 below). The 2 wooden sticks when secured in place will release the locking tabs found at the inner surface of the CANBUS cover. 2. Insert a small flat head screwdriver unto one of the 2 tiny indents (mislabeled tabs in photo 2) on the CANBUS cover. See photo 2. They are molded on the side where there are many small square windows. (I used 2.5mm jeweler's screwdriver) Slowly use a prying motion with the screwdriver as you work away from the center of the CANBUS cover towards where one of the wooden inserts are. Notice the direction of the force to remove CANBUS cover as seen in photo 2. You can make removal easier if you use the index finger of one hand pushing/pulling in the same direction while using the screwdriver with the other hand. Work to release one side only. When one side releases it is easy to remove the CANBUS cover as seen again in photo 2 as the whole cover now pivots free. 3. Trim the tab located at each end (of the CANBUS cover) with a sharp hobby knife (exercise extreme care when working with sharp instruments) and sand smooth with motor tool. See photos 3 and 4. This will make removal of the cover easier in the future without the need for the wooden sticks. Slight finger pressure and small screwdriver and the cover comes off in a jiffy. | Eddy, Thanks a lot for helping me do the SmartTop today. I've already used it several times and love the functionality of being able to operate the top to close/open from a distance without having to sit there and hold the control. A must for any SLK user who plans on using the convertible top! |

Some effort required but should be off within 5 minutes. Just need flat wooden coffee stirrer, masking tape, small flat head screwdriver, and something to cut the wooden stirrer to size (I used a anvil-type branch pruner). After trimming the tab inside the cover, it should come off within two minutes with just finger and small flat head screwdriver.
