Default Smart Top Amperage and Plug Slot

So my Smart Top module arrived today. And I have read some threads recommending running the power from the fuse box rather than tapping the red wire. I like the idea of using the "fuse doubler", which is the cheap part you can get that allows you to pull a fuse, insert the doubler, wire the ST module to one fuse slot on the doubler and allow the other slot to service what it was intended for. My question is what amp fuse should be pulled/used for the ST module? 5? 10?

I am "electricity challenged", so any tips would be appreciated.

Also, the install manual states that the plug to pull on the wiring harness is the third from the right. But it also states that on late model SLK's it might not be this plus and to try them all in sequence. I have a 2007 SLK55 and was wondering if anyone has actual knowledge of which plug to use.

Thanks all. This forum and the people here are awesome.

Hi mate,

A 5 amp will do just fine once you get to the terminal blocks its the one closest to the front of the car and try the 3rd from the right if you get nothing move on to the next one so long as your careful to only connect it test it and if you get an error/nothing happens move onto the next one and don't leave it hooked up to the wrong line for too long there will be no issues.

Once you have the CAN block in front of you it will probably only take 5 minutes to test every connector

I helped Scott (V8SLK) install the SmartTop in his SLK55, when you open the cover to the wire harness/loom, the CANBUS you're looking for is the one closest to the front (NOT the one closest to the seat). There should be a side in the CANBUS where there is one or two unoccupied slots, count from THAT side. It is the no. 3 slot from the side that has the empty spaces. IIRC, if this doesn't work, then use no.3 slot from the opposite side. You'll know if you connected correctly because the roof error message will show at the MFD (multi-function display) as long as there's no power to the SmartTop.

You can lengthen the POWER and GROUND wires from the SmartTop by unscrewing the attachment point and inserting a longer wire in its place. I used gauge 16 red wire for power, and gauge 16 black wire for ground. For ground, I used the factory one near the hood/bonnet release lever.

Here's a link: (study pages 11, 28 and 30 well) http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r171...y-once-30.html

I used a 10 amp on mine but since the SmartTop uses very little juice, the 5 amp should also work (probably safer).
