Default Sport Airbox SLK350

MB Dealer in the UK has just advised the Part No., for an alternative Sport airbox + filter approx cost £120 Cleaner + fitting.

This is supposed to increase exhaust noise to more sports character (i find the exhaust note a bit quiet - would prefer more sound

As far as i am aware this is part of the German SLK350 sport package launched in Sept 2006

*Sport Pack 952 Aircleaner P/N A 273 090 06 01
Standard Aircleaner P/N A 273 090 02 01

Has anybody got the Sport Air Cleaner, do you think it worth upgrading the airbox + filter to get a more sporty sound out of the 350 ?

Any Comments ?

for 120 pounds thats very expensive for drop in filters, Why not go for K&N's or Green filters which cost less!

For the Sport package airbox (280 and 350), you do not need any fitting or extra filter, everything is included.

The sound is not more noisy, it sounds different and it is each penny worth! May be the price is high, but you do not drive a Kia Sportage

i went to my dealer, the sport box part number includes the top of the engine cover and air filters and costs £120. however it uses the same air filters as the standard box (on the 350) and the parts guy said it might just be a prettier box with no fundementally different sound or functionality.

Hi Vin,

I inquired about the air filters, too: They are the same as stock, so you are right. But prettier box ...
http://www.slkworld.com/slk-r171-gen...lk-2007-a.html
I think the standard box looks better.

But which functionality should a air box have than filtering the sucked in air? Perhaps a very little bit improvement of performance?
I am still considering about the air-box-filter-green-changing-topic.

I think Gero can tell more about the sound, for he has already installed the airbox of the sport package. The sound must have changed because of the other airbox. Whether it is a improvement or only an increase of loudness might be discussed.

Hello Bernd,

the Sportfilter Box is worthy every Cent.

The performance of the car is better and the sound is changing at 4000/Umin from a bear to a tiger. Take it and you will have the same fun like me.

I changed the paper filters into K&N filters, too. Now the sound is changing at 3400/Umin.

The fitting is a question of just 5 minutes. Your dealer should do that for free,

link to air box removal from Ynot: http://www.slkworld.com/performance-...r-install.html

should be a simple swap -- remove old airbox and fit the sports airfilter box.

thanks for the fitting advice guys, was soooooo easy to fix, i can barely change a bulb so trust me anyone can do it.

Will report on the sound difference soon.

also note guys the new sports air box does not have the air grate on entry to the airbox. also it has a rear rubbery membrane on both sides.

the standard and sports air box both use the same air filters.

all i can say is there is definitely a sound differnce, sounds a little deeper and begins lower in the rev range. Also the engine feels a bit smoother but i think thats more to do with the new filters

Uh no mate.

The 55 airbox is different entirely and already has a larger interior volume than the 350/280 boxes.

My guess is that it will as they have the same sports package in Europe for the 280 as well as the 350. Bring the part no. to your local MB and they can check it out for you.
